Pregnant after 35

Having my u/s @ 2pm

This is a follow up to yesterday's post.  The spotting I had was light pink and I didn't have much cramping to speak of.  No different than I've had over the past few weeks here and there.  I haven't had anymore spotting since yesterday afternoon.  I'm very thankful!

They will do a vaginal u/s today and I'm going to the hospital to have it done.  My nurse told me that they want me to drink 32 oz of water before.  She was puzzled by that since she ordered a vaginal u/s.  I told her I would drink the water anyway.  Has anyone else needed a full bladder for a vaginal u/s?

I want to thank you all for your kind and reassuring words yesterday.  It means a lot to me.

Re: Having my u/s @ 2pm

  • I have never had to drink water before an u/s, vag or belly.  I don't get that...  Good luck today and be sure to check in and let us know how it goes!

  • I had to drink lots of water before all of my ultrasounds. They started the ultrasound on top of my belly so the water helped show everything. When they wanted to do the vaginal I was told to use the restroom really good :o) then they put in the probe.

I hope everything is okay with you and your baby!

  • I had a couple of vag ultrasounds after my bleeding and yeah, full bladder is easier for them to see stuff, apparently.  Not an unusual request for them to want you to drink a bunch of water and help facilitate that.

Good luck.. I'm betting everything is just fine.   Just continue to take it easy a little bit.

  • I just got back from my first ultrasound 5 minutes ago! I was told to drink 32 oz beginning one hour before. I finished it about 15 minutes before my appt. The ultrasound was abdominal, and you could see everything. I'm 9 weeks 2 days, so I suspect that yours will work abdominally too. I gather that if your bladder is full, it pushed the uterus up and they can get a better image.

the 32 oz over an hour was not too bad. In fact, I still haven't been to the bathroom - I am by no means 'dancing' as they said I would be Smile

    Good luck!

  • Good luck this afternoon. I have no doubt you'll get news that your LO is just fine.

I always had to empty my bladder for t/v u/s's. Wierd.

  • Good luck today, Shannon! I hope that you have great news. :)

And I was never asked to have a full bladder for any of my u/s. In fact, the tech had me empty mine since it was TOO full (just from regular drinks).

  • Shannon.. the full bladder thing is really only important in the first few weeks, like where you are now.   Helps to potentially see the source of your bleeding, too.  And if I recall, it was only important if you're having a vag U/S.  Abdominals... which most people have... it doesn't matter.  And after a while, baby's big enough to see everything so that's when you want the empty bladder.

My U/S tech is awesome and explained all that to me.
