Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

Question if you delivered at Baylor Grapevine (or any Baylor really)

I heard something that really bothered me in our childbirth class and I can't get over it...

The RN teaching the class told us that the pediatrician checks the baby in the nursery and we aren't able to be there and DH can watch "IF the blinds in the nursery are open".

Is this what happened with you at Baylor? Don't I have the right to say I don't want anything done to our baby without me or DH being present?

If she isn't going to be checked in the room (which I can't see why they can't do this stuff in the room), then I want DH to be able to be with her for everything and know what is being done, not "IF the blinds are open."

Re: Question if you delivered at Baylor Grapevine (or any Baylor really)

  • Yes!! I delivered at Andrew Womens in Fort Worth & this is exactly what they do!!! They do all the assessments etc in the nursery & you are not allowed in. If I had known this I would have delivered elsewhere.

All of the hospitals I have worked at have allowed the parents in to watch the bath etc, my DH was only allowed to watch from the windows. I really don't think you can say you are "family centered" when you are taking the baby to the nursery & the parents are not allowed to follow.

  • i delivered at Baylor Grapevine and my pedi did our checks in the room - the only time she left me was when i sent her to the nursery at night - yes, you do have the right to day what you want done to your child and you are allowed to be present - you are also allowed to refuse any medical treatment - lots of patients do what they're told because it's "hospital policy" - know your rights as a patient and don't be afraid to stand up for them
  • I delivered at Baylor Dallas and the pedi checked DD in our room.
  • It must have been the crabby on call pedi because I asked that she be checked in our room & the RN said no. Ugghh, I should have complained.

  • I delivered at Baylor Grapevine. After about an hour with us they did take her to the nursery. I was still in recovery after my C-section and I was pretty out of it from all the meds they were giving me. I'm pretty sure that DH had to stand by the window while they bathed her and gave her a bottle of formula (I was livid about that, but that's another story).

As far as I know, she stayed in there until they finally brought me to my room 3-4 hours after she was born.

  • I delivered at Baylor Grapevine also.  For some reason my pediatrician's office had mistakenly informed me that my pedi wouldn't come to the hospital so I got the on call pedi who I didn't particularly like.  He did examine DS in the nursery...really, I never knew he was even being examined or anything until after the fact.  I never asked to be a part of it or have him examined in the room though, so I don't know whether they would've allowed it.  The only thing they did in the room was his hearing test.

  • I delievered at Baylor Frisco and as far as I know the pedi did the checks in the nursery. This usually happened because they were there so early in the morning and DS wasn't in the room with me yet. DS spent the nights in the nursery because it was so hard for me to get out of bed after my c-section and DH had to go home each night.

After delivery DS stayed with us until we were ready to try sleeping for the night. They checked him in the delivery room with us present. Nothing was given to him such as medication unless they talked with us first.

  • Baylor Dallas and ike was taken to the nursery, DH wasn't able to go because the floor was under construction and the NICU babies and healthy babies were in the same nursery :o(  I was out of it for most of the 6 days i was there
  • I delivered @ Baylor Frisco and they keep the baby in the room at all times unless you request that they be brought to the nursery. I was very upset that during the time I had him in the nursery to get some sleep they did the heel prick test without telling me. Next birth I will make it clear that I don't want anyone to do any procedure without me or my DH present. But overall I was pleased. This is the exact reason I didn't want to deliver at Plano Presby. They also take the babies to the nursery for the pedi appt. I would be VERY suspicious of any hospital that wouldn't allow you to even look in the window during the visit.

  • I go to Presby Dallas. They did the checks in the nursery but you could watch or go in if wanted. I used that time to shower. I trust my peditrician. I've known him forever. I trust that for 20 minutes he is going to take good care of my baby. To me, that's not that big of a deal, but I'm a very laid back mother.

As far as after the birth, both of my kiddos weren't breathing well at birth, so they went straight to special care. I have no idea what protocall is.

  • I think it depends on if it's c-section or vaginal birth.

I had a c-section and they took the kids too the nursery to make sure they were breathing properly, etc. During that time they gave the babies a bath. Unfortunately, DH and I missed that.

We also weren't present when the pedi did the first exam. However, with this LO, I am using my twins' pedi and I trust her!! She is wonderful and very hands on. I actually have a feeling she will come into the room and go over everything with me.

this - except the heel test thing. we had dd2 with us at all times if we wanted.

  • we just delivered there in jan. and loved it. ?Our ped. did our checks in our room and spent time with us!! ?We LOVED it. ?We've had 4, and this was the best hospital we've had so far. ?The staff was really great, they were patient with us (we had a lot of family come), and they gave us our privacy too. ?I would recommend it to anyone!
