Baby Names

Summer?

We are thinking about naming our DD Summer, but I am worried it is not distinguished enough. A little bit of background- I spend the summers at a cabin on a lake all the way through high school and college. That is where DH and I met and we had a summer romance for years before we got married after I graduated from college. We like the name because of the special meaning it has for us. I am just worried the name is not distinguished enough and that it may be a little strange that her name is Summer, but she will be born in October. What do you think? Also, do you have any middle name suggestions that would help to make the name more distinguished? Our last name begins with  T, so any L middle names are ruled out because it would make her initials SLT.

TIA!!

Re: Summer?

  • I'm not a fan of it but totally respect your meaning to it.  I just don't see an adult with the name Summer, but if you love it (esp for the meaning) then go for it!!!

    L names:
    Leann

    Leigh

    Layne

hmmm, I'm just not creative today

  • My friend has a daughter names Summer who was also born in October!!!  It is her favorite month!!!  The MN is after a relative!

    Some options:

Summer Nicole, Summer Elise, Summer Mae.  Those are just a view that popped in my head!

    GL!

  • I think Summer is beautiful. I think of Summer Sanders, the Olympic gold medalist for swimming.?

    Summer Catherine/Katherine

    Summer Jane

    Summer Allison

    Summer Margaret?

    Summer Elizabeth?

  • I work with a woman who calls her daughter Summer. For the longest time I thought that was her real first name.  Her name is Isabella Maria. Her husband really liked Summer so that's what they always called her for a nn.

If you like it enough for a first name use it, by the time she's an adult I don't think it will be that unusual to hear as an adult first name.

  • We went to HS with a girl named Summer.  She was super sweet.  (And now that I think about it, we also had girls named Winter and Autumn in our class.  Hmmmm  lol)

  • I'm not sure what you mean by distinguished enough.... but I think Summer is a cute name.

    Summer Rachelle

    Summer Fiona

    Summer Elizabeth

    Summer Alexis

    Summer Noelle

    Summer Ashlyn

  • I like the meaning and the significance it has for you.  However, I am having a hard time picturing the name "Summer" on a business card, an election ballot, an office door, etc.

If you are worried about it being distinguished, then maybe you should consider using it as a middle name instead.  You could still call her summer, and you would still have that significance in her name. However, she might appreciate having a more formal/traditional first name as an adult.

Names with a similar feel, but slightly more mainstream, would be:

     May

    June

Julie/Julia (kind of like July, right?)

BTW, I did go to school with a girl named Summer, and another named Sunshine.  Both were very nice.

  • I like the name summer.
  • Summer is a lovely name, but I do think it's kinda funny that she won't be born in the summer with that name. I don't think you shouldn't use it because she's born in Oct. I've always loved those nature type names. I think you should go for it!
  • I believe in "the way out name".  Give the first name as the fall back name encase they have a hard time with the name you call them.  My daughter is Grayson but her first name is Avery so if she doesn't like her name when she gets to school because it is a boys name then she has "a way out"  The teacher will call her Avery W on the first day and she can go by that and no one would even know about the Grayson part.  So if you named her Elane Summer . Then her business card could say Elane T  and she is still called Summer by everyone that knows her.
  • I have a good friend named Summer.  She is almost 30 years old and her name has always seemed to fit whatever age she is in.  Her middle name is Faye (after a grandmother) and she was born in January!  I've never heard a story behind why they picked it, but I guess her parents just liked it.  She also has a sister named Rehanna (Re-ah-nah), so her parents didn't follow a classical theme for sure!

  • Summer sounds beautiful..it's meaningful to you and your hubby, also has background that goes with your life/past. :) It should be pretty easy finding a perfect middle name!!

    God Bless

  • I grew up with a friend named Summer mn Adlesa.. She was also born in October, but you know what? I really never even thought about it being weird?  I work at a hospital and I see adult Summers all the time, I don't think Summer is a 'young" name it can grow with the child just fine IMO...

  • I like the name Summer. Why the band on the initials SLT? I can see no MN being Eve or Rayne.

Summer Melania, Summer Arden, Summer Michelle, Summer Nadine

  • I thought I would chime in since I have a little experience on this one:)....my name is Summer...and I actually love my name...I didn't like it growing up....just bc of all the dumb kids in school that used to pick on me.....but now that I am older, I love it and everyone says it fits me perfectly....my middle name is Leigh and my husband calls me Summer Lynn sometimes:) haha

Just speaking from experience...I am older, an adult, a professional and am very distinguished for a "Summer" if I do say so myself.....haha

She might get picked on a little in school...but it has always been a conversation starter to be honest....and I am such a BEACH person that it just fits:) Good luck!!!

Oh....and I meant to add that my name looks pretty good on a business card too;)....I am in the public alot and do alot of marketing stuff with my name all over it...your daughter will be successful no matter what her name, initials etc are...bc you and your DH are going to raise her to be amazing no matter what and you will be a GREAT Mommy!!!

  • My name is Somer (pronounced Summer) Lynn, and I agree with above - I absolutly LOVE IT!  It sets the bar pretty high for picking out a girls name.  My DH's family calls me Somer Breeze - which is cute too.
