Babies: 0 - 3 Months

no swaddling=AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

DD had her 4 month appt yesterday, and pedi said we should stop swaddling.  She also said try not to rock/nurse to sleep because you'll have to do it for a long time...I asked what if she's wailing and pedi said pick her up and calm her, then try again.

We went through our usual bedtime routine (minus the swaddle), and she went down peacefully for 20 minutes. Then she woke up screaming and continued everytime we set her down after getting her calmed in our arms.  So I broke down and swaddled her, and she went right to sleep.  We'll wait a few nights to start...

Any suggestions to get her to sleep peacefully without the swaddle?

  • I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but why should you stop swaddling?  It seems like if it works for your baby then it wouldn't be a problem.  I don't know though, I didn't swaddle my child when she was a baby.

I think I read somewhere that swaddling can impede hip mobility. I can't keep my daughter swaddled for too long, so I don't really have any tips. Sorry! Good Luck.

  • Same thing happen to me. ?I am now trying to gradually stop the swaddle. ?The past 3 nights just I left one arm out. ?1st night she had trouble sleeping but now she is use to it. ?Tonight I am going to try both arms out and then hopefully next week try no swaddle. ?Good luck

I agree.  Try it in stages.  This way LO isn't traumatized by not being swaddled at all.  DS didn't like being swaddled after 3 weeks so I'm not speaking from experience, just opinion and what I've seen work for girls on here.

  • Once you get both arms out, try a sleep sack.  It'll still keep her contained and maybe feel a little better for her, rather than just being out in the crib by herself.
  • Our pedi said it was fine to keep swaddling, though I know we'll have to stop some time. ?I tried an arm out for a nap, and completely unswaddled for a nap, and unswaddled was a total fail. ?One arm out worked once and was a fail the 2nd time I tried. ?So I don't have any advice b/c we are trying to figure it out too. ?I think we will try an arm out until he gets used to that, then both. ?I know some people said they just swaddled looser so LO could work their way out during the night but still go down well. ?If you're using a swaddle me or miracle blanket where their feet are in the bottom it would still be safe if they got their arms out and they wouldn't be able to get caught up in it or get it on their faces. ?GL and please post how it goes for those of us who need to unswaddle soon too. ?
  • I think this is a case where unless there is a valid medical reason, I would ignore your pedi and keep swaddling. We swaddled DS until he was 7 months old. The 4 month period is especially hard for sleep in general and I did anything I could to keep my DS happy and comfortable during that time.
