Preemies

Hello, New here.

I'm friends with TriciaJoy and Ami on here, so you might already know if me.

My little girl Madison was born last week at exactly 32 weeks. I had an aweful pregnancy, I bled almost the entire time, and no one knew why. I ended up getting the steroid shots at 28 weeks cause they had a feeling she would come early. Well she did. She was 3lbs 15oz at birth, and 17 inches long. She is gaining weight, and doesn't need any help breathing. that is the good news. The bad news...she has sleep apnea pretty bad. Today I was holding her and she stopped breathing twice. She just turned blue and all the monitars went off. I froze, I was so scared. It really didn't hit me until I got home, and I've been crying ever since.

My head knows she's in the right place, but my heart just wants her home. I want to cuddle and kiss her...and now I can barely touch her :(

I am just praying everyday until her gets home.

Re: Hello, New here.

  • Having a baby in the NICU is so hard.  I know it seems like it will never get better, but with time it will.  Most premature babies have problems with bradys and apnea.  One of our little guys came home  a week before the other and it was so hard, but it was because of bradys.  You don't want her home if she's going to stop breathing.  She will come home when she's ready.  Just hang in there and spend as much time as you can with her.  Hopefully she'll be home soon!

  • Hi sweet cheeks! I had the board praying for you last week! Good to see you here.

(well, you know, I wish you didn't need to be here, but you know what I mean.)

  • I'm sorry :(  having a baby in the NICU is *so* hard.  Hang in there!  You're not alone.  Sending prayers!
  • hey sweetie--

not sure if you remember me from SAL & high risk pregnancy.  I had bad SCHs too...

Anyways, congrats on making it to 32 weeks--that is a great milestone.  Your daughter was a nice size at birth--that is awesome too.

As far as the apneas: I am sure the NICU nurses have explained how common this is for preemies.  She WILL grow out of it.  Just be patient and give her lots of love.

Stella stops breathing & turns blue just about every time we give her a bottle & she will be 39 weeks on Friday.

Hang in there--you are already a great mommy!  We are all here for you!

  • Being told that your baby not breathing is "normal" or "typical" is unbelievable. ?It is true in this case although it doesn't make it any easier. My heart breaks for you and any parent who has to ?experience it. ?As pp said though, it WILL stop. ?She is safe at the NICU. ?They will take care of her and help you become more comfortable and knowledgeable about her situation. ?Hang in there. ?It will get better.

  • Oh sweetie, I am so sorry that she had an apnea episode when you were holding her. One of my twins did that several times the first time I held him. It is a TERRIBLE way to start motherhood :(

All of the previous posters are correct - apnea is a normal preemie thing. It's a terribly frightening thing, and really, there is NOTHING normal about a baby stopping breathing. But preemies do it, and they do outgrow it.

Does your NICU allow kangaroo care? Try to do it today if they allow it. It is THE BEST THING EVER, for both you and her.
