Pregnant after 35

Safe Sleep Aids?

Are there any safe sleep aids to help with insomnia?  I am always tired, go to bed and fall asleep but after getting up a couple of times to go to the bathroom I can't fall back asleep.  So am usually awake from 1AM onwards --- it makes for a really long work day.

I have tried:  warm milk, warm bath, reading, lavender on my pillow, watching TV, tidying up around the house and plain old lying there in bed watching the minutes tick away on the clock.

Last night I even woke DH up at 4:30 to have sex, ha ha, god love him for being so accommodating ;0)  Oh, and he fell asleep afterwards but I didn't.

Re: Safe Sleep Aids?

  • I'd speak to your doctor, but I do know that Tylenol PM is deemed safe. I wouldn't take it daily but maybe on occasion to help.

  • Tylenol PM is safe.  I did not like it at all as it left me really groggy in the morning.. I did not sleep when I was pregnant with my 2nd at all - I could not even nap.. I was miserable the entire pregnancy!  I ended up going on Ambien (prescription) - that is the best stuff ever!!!  I was able to sleep through the night & if I woke up to go to the bathroom or my child woke up.. I was able to get up (do what I needed to do) & go right back to sleep with out any problems & felt great in the morning.

  • Mine has always ok'd Tylenol PM and Benedryl.  Benedryl seriously makes me feel drunk and not a good drunk and the Tylenol PM works a little for me.  GL...insomnia sucks doesn't it.  I was praying I wouldn't have it this time but here I am at 12wks. and already dealing with it.  I guess it's Gods way of getting us ready for whats to come :)
  • I feel your pain.  I never sleep anymore while DH sleeps through EVERYTHING!  I'm going to talk to the dr on Tuesday about what's ok to take often.  I've tried Tylenol PM a couple of times and it works well but when I don't take it I don't sleep. :(

  • My doc actually recommended vitamin B6 and a half a unisom for m/s relief.

Maybe try a lower dose of unisom or tylenol PM to see if it will work.

I never need a full dose of any sleep aid.

    For me:

Full dose = groggy in the morning

Half dose = rested and happy!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Thanks for the suggestions.  When I was pregnant last year my naturopathic doctor said Calms Forte was the only thing to take, but it just doesn't work for when I wake up in the middle of the night - I don't always know when I'm going to have insomnia so I don't want to take something everynight before bed.

Yes, it does suck!!!  I also get this really strange "restlessness" where my body just feels eeby-jeeby...if that makes sense.

But I did just start to feel the baby moving and that is really cool!!!!

I'll see what my midwife has to say for the sleep aids.
