lunchmeat?

Ok, I'm curious how many people are eating lunchmeat?

I've read many, many articles on how it's bad for you while pregnant and so on, but I've read that you can reheat it to some temp and it's ok. Does that mean I can throw my much wanted yummy to my tummy lunchmeat in the microwave for a minute and I'm safe or if I need to cook at 450 degrees for thiry minutes in the oven?

Every morning..Monday through Saturday...I awake at 5:15am...willingly to make my beloved honey lunch for his day at work (he works outdoors in the mountains, no food is available other then the nasty gas station grub they put out every three days or so, which he ate everyday till he met me). I make him a ham and cheese sanwhich on wheat bread most days. On those days, all I can think about is....EATING A HAM AND CHEESE ON WHEAT BREAD.

All I want is a Ham and Cheese sandwich, but I'm scared to death of eating one because of Listeria.

Re: lunchmeat?

  • I eat it all the time, baby is fine.
  • Loading the player...
  • dont be! just warm it up in the microwave for like 10 secs until steaming and enjoy yourself a sandwich! :)
  • That was a really long post for asking about lunchmeat.

My doctor recommended heating lunchmeat to a steaming temp, which shouldn't be long in the microwave. Voila.

That said, a lot of women choose to have lunchmeat and not heat it and they have perfectly healthy babies. The overall risk is pretty low to begin with.

  • If it's from a good place, packaged well etc. You should be fine. It's because of a bacteria that can grow on it (and soft serve ice cream machines for that matter), but realistically, the chances of you going to subway or dq and getting something unhealthy are very rare. If you feel better with it, you can nuke it till it steams.

  • I asked DH's aunt (a nurse) and family friend (doctor) about this, and both said eating lunch meat is perfectly fine.  They both said turkey and chicken are probably better than ham or salami, but that the chances of getting listeria from lunch meat is incredibly low.  They said to be more concerned about meats like bologna and hot dogs.
  • Yeah, my doctor told me that lunch meat is fine as long as it's from a quality source (basically all the name brands that you get in major chain grocery stores and at subway, etc.).  That being said, I also find myself a little nervous having it without heating (I just heat in the microwave for 20 seconds or so).  Which is silly because I'm certain my doctor is much more knowledgeable than me when it comes to what is okay or not during pregnancy!  But I'm finding that I'm a bit neurotic about things.  :)

That being said - I still have allowed myself to have it (since the doc says it's okay), I just have it very occassionally (less than once a week).

  • I just had subway for lunch :)  My doctor told me that its ok to eat as long as i don't eat it more than like once a week.  And he didn't say anything about having to heat it first either.
  • I don't do lunchmeat but that's more because I'm close to being entirely vegetarian than other health concerns.

Ditto everyone else's advice and have at the ham and cheese. If you're really worried, micro the meat then make it into a grilled ham and cheese sandwich - yum!

  • Thank you! I think I need to go make myself a Ham & Cheese Sandwich!

All I am right now is food & emotion.

  • eat a sandwich!  i ate lunch meat all the time when pg with DS.  as long as it's from a reputable place you should be fine.

  • Im high risk but anyways my dr told me if i could avoid it then to avoid it until after the baby comes. So no lunchmeat for me until march
  • Dr. told me that lunch meat is fine, and no heating/microwaving is necessary.  If in doubt, ask your Dr.

  • I eat it and I don't warm it up.  But my family has a deli, so I always get things that haven't been opened for very long and only get enough to make my sandwich for that day.

  • As long as you use meat and cheese that comes packaged and don't get it from the deli, you are fine. The threat of Listeria comes from the deli slicing machines that heaven only knows how often they wash those things. If you really want to be a good girl, make it a ham and cheese on whole wheat PANINI!! Yummers!
