Anyone go from 2 cars to 1?

DH and I still owe quite a bit on our cars (more than the trade in value).  We'd  like to go down to one car, but we aren't sure how to go about it.  Anyone have any advice?  since we'll be living in town we'll really only need one car, plus getting rid of they payment would be very nice.

  • DH would drop me off at my office on his commute or I would take public transit (I couldn't park at work, so I couldn't drive anyway). Having him drop me off and pick me up meant that we had to coordinate schedules. It was the biggest challenge. Other trips weren't hard to coordinate. We typically run errands and attend social events together. The occasional time where one of us took the car just ment letting the other person know to make sure they didn't plan on using it at the same time. It really hasn't been a big deal for us.

  • Thanks PeachyPear!

I guess I should clarify that my concern is about getting rid of one car when we still owe so much...do we trade in two cars, take the negative equity and get one car still leaving us with a lower car payment than the two and only the upkeep of one car?

  • We did - and did it while we still both worked.  Whoever needed the car during the day (usually me, as I went to various clients during the day) would drop off the other.  After awhile, DH ended up getting a vespa - much cheaper than a car, and incredible gas mileage - so he could get around without having me to drop him off if need be.  It's definitely doable, especially if someone can take public trasnportation to work, can be dropped off at the beginning of the day & picked up, etc.  We've been with only 1 car for years now.
