1st Trimester

Dramamine

I'm flying tomorrow and still am pretty queasy (no vomiting though).  I bought some Dramamine to help me (it is listed in a book from my Dr. as an "ok" medication to take).  Has anyone else taken this while flying?  Did it help?  ThanksBig Smile

Re: Dramamine

  • I've always heard dramamine is a no-no in pregnancy.  According to safefetus.com, "No adequate human data but suggested possible association with cardiovascular defects and inguinal hernia in 1st trimester exposure"

So I'd try other ways to avoid m/s queasiness before taking dramamine

  • I hate flying and take Dramamine everytime I fly, so for me, it works. I asked my OB and she said it was safe to take. Check with your doc?
  • I always thought it wasn't ok to take Dramamine when you're pregnant, but I haven't asked my doctor. Even when I'm not pregnant I throw up on an airplane.  It's definitely a must take for me.  That's why I'm not planning on flying at all during this pregnancy.  I would just be miserable.

  • I asked, and was explicitly told to not take it. Which means no long road trips for me, though the plane should be ok.

  • I was told NOT to take it during my first pregnancy when I traveled.  I used Sea Bands while flying and they worked for me.

Yikes, that makes me worried! I will check again at my next appointment because we have two trips planned over the next few months that involve flying!

No reason to worry - have you tried a Sea Band? Heck, I think I am going to invest in one just to help with my all-day m/s, lol.

  • Epocrates (a drug prescribing guide) has it listed as class B for all trimesters. (For comparison, Tylenol is also a class B.)

Check again with your doctor and your pharmacist, but it should be safe.

You could also ask about benadryl since that is a very similar antihistamine drug that could help with motion sickness, and is on pretty much every doctor's safe list.

  • Here is the link to the safe fetus information the pp posted. I'm guessing the effects they're talking about were in some kind of animal studies, although they don't specify. They still have it listed as a class B, too.

  • I get motion sickness as well, and I flew last week and used Sea Bands.  I did still feel a little queasy, but I think they really helped.  They are completely safe.
  • I was told to only take Bonine.
