Pregnant after 35

40 week visit (long!)

So today was my 40 week visit and I was going out for lunch with my MIL beforehand and had thought to take her home before my visit. But timing was off and she came with me. Weird but it ended up being the best thing having someone with me.

I got there a bit late and since I'm now under my DH's insurance, I had to fill out the paperwork. But they finally got me in the room and weighed me (up 4 lbs but I just ate a HUGE lunch and was retaining water, so I think I probably only gained 1 lb). My MIL was with me to hear the heartbeat but they said strip from the waist down. Uh... don't want MIL for that. But she said she'd leave for the internal and I put the paper around myself (she closed her eyes).

The doctor came in and he was the only one in the practice I hadn't met. Seemed VERY nice. Listened to the heartbeat (good and MIL left) and my belly was measuring right on track (40 cm for 40 weeks) and the internal exam showed not much progress?dilated to 1 cm and thinned out (no percentage)?so he recommended scheduling an induction for next week. I'll talk to the coordinator about that tomorrow and it will likely begin on the 13th?go in at night, with expected delivery on the 14th. That is, unless he comes on his own before then.

However, there was one minor glitch today. I mentioned the baby's movement had decreased (and as far as I could tell it had) so they sent me to the hospital's satellite office (two buildings down) for a NST. I was SO glad to have my MIL with me since I think I would have been nervous alone.

After a bit of a snafu with my insurance?their computers were down and I was trying to make sure the place was IN network to be covered at 100% with no copay/deductible?I was set.

They hooked me up and at first I wasn't feeling movement when he clearly WAS moving. I felt like an idiot.  I guess have to pay more attention. The nurse was so nice.  And at least everything was fine and they did an ultrasound to check fluid. That was also fine.

Before I left the perinatologist wanted to do a growth scan and he's estimated to be at 7 lb 11 oz ? yay... no 10 lb baby like my DH. The office also told me their estimates are generally pretty accurate. I think can handle an 8 lb baby. I was just worried about bigger!

And the nurse informed me that I was having a Braxton Hicks contraction when I was there. I had no clue that was what I was feeling. Apparently I've been having them for a few weeks and just didn't realize it. Again, I feel like an idiot. But what else is new. LOL.

So I was out from 11:45 until 6:15, including doctors visits, lunch, travel time. I am EXHAUSTED.   But my baby is OK and that's all that matters.

  • Wow - what a day. I'm sorry your progress probably isn't what you expected but so very happy to hear that you and your baby are doing well! :)
  • Whew, what a day you had. No wonder you're exhausted. Kick up those feet and enjoy those BH contractions as you will be experiencing the real ones soon enough! Glad your little guy is doing well 7lbs11oz sounds like a good size to me!

Get some good sleep tonight. You need to be well rested for labor day Wink

  • Great news! Now that little boy just needs to come out!!!

  • Great news, I'm glad baby is doing fine. Hopefully he'll come out before your induction. I also can't tell if I have BH contractions or not. Sometimes I get a little crampy and I think my ute is harder than normal but I can't really be sure. So yeah, I'm also clueless. We'll probably know when we're in labor though, those contractions are sure to be noticed! GL next week :)
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • Glad everything went well!!
  • Hey! You are right, unless one of our LO's comes sooner, we will both be headed for our inductions at the same time. We are scheduled to be at the hospital at 8pm on the 13th for the cervadil, then they will start the pit at 4 am on the 14th! Heres to short labors for both of us!

  • I'm glad everything is OK and I hope your LO flies the coop soon.

It seems so wierd that they can move and us not feel it. Even at the size mine is now, that amazes me but I guess it remains the case even when they are bigger.

  • Wow, what a day! I am glad to hear everything is going well with you and the LO.
  • Hooray for a healthy baby!!! Hope you got a good nights rest though.
  • Wow, what a long day!  I'm glad you got reassuring information, though!
