? about the evil 'fast food'

We took DD to McDonalds this weekend, we needed lunch and were in a hurry (we go to McDs maybe 1-2x a month).  She had white milk, chicken nuggets, and apples.

It made me think about how people act like fast food is the root of all evil.  OK, so grilled chicken would have been better, but it doesn't seem like that awful of a lunch to me?  Am I missing something?

Re: ? about the evil 'fast food'

  • I don't think it is the root of all evil at all.
  • IMO it really isn't all that bad as long as it isn't an everyday thing.  My girls get the nuggets and apples too

  • It's really not THAT bad, in the grand scheme of things. I know my kids have had it with their grandparents, but it's not something I'm going to get them.  I like to pretend they haven't had it, but knowing they have hasn't killed my soul...yet. Stick out tongue

  • I don't really think its the root of all evil. Its probably not a good thing if its all you're eating, but once in awhile? Fine. Everything in moderation.

  • My kids eat plenty of fast food, and they're both happy, healthy, thriving children.  They don't drink juice or soda, they have sweets in moderation, and if we do get fast food, we'll do the fruit choice as the side instead of fries.  They also get white milk to drink.  I think there are lot worse things in life than little kids eating a few chicken nuggets.  Especially since I don't get home from work with the kids on weekdays until 6:30 or 7:00 and don't always have time to cook something.
  • I actually really do think fast food is evil. I wish all fast food restaurants would disappear.
  • Obviously if parents are chosing that for a dauly meal, yes, it may be an issue later for the kid but once in a while isn't going to kill them.

I love when someone at work told me "when my kid is out wiwth us, they eat regular food, never nuggets or mac n cheese or those things from the menu" I was like, well EFFIN fabulous for you. My kid does.

I cook for her just about 5 days a week after work, on the weekends, we eat crap. Well mostly crap, we eat out a lot.

  • We were on the road and in a hurry once so went through a McDonald's drive-through. I never go to McD's and I was very unhappy to see that Happy Meals are just given in bags now! Remember the un boxes they used to come in??? DS is the pickiest eater alive and refused to eat any of his Happy Meal anyway. Oh well. The kid eats a Panera grilled cheese about 3 times a week - what can you do?

  • I don't think nuggets, milk, and apples are the problem.

I think Big Macs, fries, and lots of soda is the problem. The nuggets get kids hooked, then they get older and want the stuff that's really bad for you.

  • That's what DD gets too.  I don't see what's so bad about it.  It's chicken, right?  She gets frozen, baked chicken nuggets at home too.  Are those horrible?

  • The only reason DD doesn't get it often is that I don't eat it often.  If I start down the slope of fast food/junk food I end up eating it often and gaining weight, so we do our best to avoid it because I am trying to stay healthy myself.  I have no problem with her having it with grandparents or aunts/uncles, only don't give it because I can't let myself have it.

  • I think it really depends on what you choose - fries and sodas are killer.  I also don't really understand why everyone is so into the chicken nuggets.  A McDonald's hamburger doesn't strike me as that much worse than chicken nuggets - it does have higher calories but has lower total fat, more fiber, more protein, more calcium, and more iron.  A four piece chicken nuggets versus a regular hamburger seem about equivalent to me...and DS tends to prefer a hamburger, so he usually gets that with apples and milk. I'm always just pleased that given a choice between fries or fruit at fast food places, he always chooses the fruit on his own.

Oh, I don't think the nuggets are better than the burger, that is just what DD picks.  Not sure why, she loves burgers at home?
