OPK question

Hello ladies- since you all were successful at TTC, have a question- just bought my first BBT thermo and OPK...it seems though that with the OPK (I got the FR), there usually will be 2 lines, but you just want it as dark or darker than the test line- that seems kind of subjective...how do you know for sure when it's a postive OPK?! THANKS!

Re: OPK question

  • I could never use OPK's (although I tried) because of PCOS but in answer to your question, you don't know for sure until after you can look back at your whole cycle:)  You'll get better at "predicting" them over time.

I would just start BD'ing as soon as I thought the line was getting darker as compared to any other day.  Also, make sure you use them more than once a day starting at least a few days before your normal O day (which if you just started BBT, you might not know yet).

  • it really takes time to figure it out. Start testing early and when you do O you will see the difference.
  • Ok thx...I am famiar w CM though, but I have the 20 test kit and they expire in 30 days, so I might start using them around CD 6 or so...to get good line color comparisons.

  • I only thought it was difficult to read when they were negative and I was trying to make something out of nothing.

When it is positive (the same color or darker than the control line) you will know it when you see it. On one cycle my positives were darker, on the next they were the same color.  You can take pictures if you want, and once you confirm with a temp shift, you will know what to look for.

  • well, i used the + or - so that was easier.  i would start using them on like CD 10 (i had 31 day cycles) and go from there.  good luck!

  • Thank you ladies- very helpful- hopefully I'll have some good news soon!

  • I used the 20-day pack of FR OPK, and started testing on day 1 after I weaned DS.  I usually got a really dark comparison line and a very faint test result line.  On day 16 I got 2 lines of the same dark color, so i assumed that was a positive result.  i agree with the other posters, start testing early and you should see a difference.  good luck!

Exactly.  If you have to ask yourself "does this look darker?" and squint at it and hold it at a special angle in direfct sunlight, then it's not a positive yet.  Also, it is possible to miss your surge if you're not testing twice a day, so don't freak if you never get a positive.

Another option is to get the digital OPKs.  They're on the spendy side but you don't have to guess- an open circle is negative and a smiley face is a positive.

  • I have when I started taking them in the charts underneath my BFP.  I took them twice a day because I got like 50 from saveontests.com. for under 30 dollars or something.
