Aspartame and Sugar Question:

Seriously, aspartame/splenda are in everything I own!  My yogurt, my pudding, my jello, my strawberry jelly, my popcicles, etc.

I had already eaten my yogurt this am when I thought of looking on it to see what was in it.  Oops. My question is:  How much of a sugar substitute do you let yourself have each day? Did your dr. say anything about it?

Thanks ladies! Have a great day!

Re: Aspartame and Sugar Question:

  • My doc didn't talk about this, and I didn't think to ask. I've been steering clear of diet soda, and my yogurt doesn't have it. But I did put splenda in my decaf coffee the other day. I think, like anything, it's all about moderation.

  • My doc said to stay away from aspartame but splenda was ok. I had just bought a case of dannon light yogurt and just noticed it has aspartame in it. I really don't want to throw it away but I guess I don't have a choice.
  • My doc says even aspartame is fine in moderation. I drink the occasional diet coke. I tried going with only regular drinks, but I figured the high fructose corn syrup wasn't that good either...

  • I have a diet soda here and there - I do try to have regular more. I can't give it up 100%.

I am changing up my yogurt, besides at this point, the regular stuff will be better!

  • I actually tried to cut out all artificial sweetners years ago.  My personal opinion is that I'd rather keep my sugar in-take moderate (but know that it's just natural sugar) then eat something that is potentially harmful.  Now that I'm pregnant, same thing.

Sugar really isn't that bad as long as you don't eat a ton of it.  Definitely steer clear of juice, soda, and sweetened yogurt because those are full of sugar.  Once you get used to less sweetner you actually won't like things that are very sweet anymore! GL  :)

  • It's best to stick with real sugar... I'm trying to have none, which is what my doctor recomended.

  • I steer clear of anything with aspartame or splenda in it period.  In my coffee, I take two packets of Truvia each morning (need to decide when I'm going to start forgoing the coffee...but I really don't consume any other caffeine at all except for the occasional something with chocolate in it).  That's all of the artificial sweetener I use.  I'm not sure if products made from the stevia plant are truly any better though...

  • I had gestational diabetes during my last pregnancy, so sugar substitute was *all* I was allowed if I wanted sweets. ?My OB said it was totally fine, and even suggested one Diet Coke per day as a treat.

  • I try not to eat any of them... studies have shown that aspartame has some dramatic effects on your memory, as well as the average person consumes more than 100 additional calories when consuming diet beverages versus someone who consumes regular ones...

  • Thank you for posting this. I was wondering the same thing.  It seems like artificial sugars are everywhere!
  • I asked my doctor about it.  I drink a lot of crystal light and I wanted to make sure it was ok.  My doctor said that it was fine.
  • I was told to avoid aspartame completely, and to have one item per day that had splenda with it - better off using regular sugar.

  • I think when you're pregnant and when you're breastfeeding that anything you can do to eliminate artificial ingredients is a good idea.  Aspertame, food dyes, MSG all of it.  It's not good for you and it's not good for the fetus.

  • my 2 drs gave me conflicting advise on this.  One said no to aspartame.  my OB said aspartame should be avoided in the 3rd tri because the baby could develop an allergy to it, but consuming it now is OK.
