gaining too much weight?

So.. uh.. Robbie gained 4lb this month. Like. out of nowhere. I haven't increased his calories in about a month (and even then, it was only 20 calories).. I know they go through catch up spurts, but holy cow.

At his checkup on June 31, he was 16lb 4 oz. Last night at weigh in he was 20lb 6oz.

I'm not sure if I should drop his calories or what.

Sheesh.. it's feast or famine around here.

Re: gaining too much weight?

  • Umn, now he weighs more than Leo! That is nuts!

Didn't LSTaylor have to decrease C&E's calories because they were gaining too fast? It's crazy that these little bitty guys are getting too big. Does not compute.

  • Way to go Robbie!!!!!!!!

At Brendan's appointment on friday he was 20 pounds 3 ounces and jumped from the 25th to 75th percentile, can you believe it!?! ?This was with his pedi gi. ?Noone has mentioned mixing the formula how it says to instead of how they told me to so I don't know what to do either lol. ??

  • That's awesome!!  He weighs more than Josh who weighed in this morning at 18 lbs 1 ounce.  I'm not sure what I would do.  What did the doctor say to do?
  • we saw the doc last week but she didn't weigh him (I just had his ears checked because he'd had a low grade fever for several days.. probably teething) so we didn't discuss it.

I hadn't actually realized he'd gained so much. I was thinking he'd gained 4lb in TWO months, but just realized that he was 16 pounds at 13 months and he's 14 months now. (You should have seen me when I figured this out. Counting months on my fingers like that can't be right..)

We have an EI meeting tomorrow to start a nutritionist at home. I guess I'll ask her about it then.
This is definitely new territory for us.

  • Oh.. and for anyone interested, who keeps up on such things-

Up until 2 months ago, I had to keep him at 120 kcal/kilo to get him to gain well (sometimes closer to 125 kcal depending how much solid food I could get into him.)

Right now, he's getting 96 kcal/kilo. WTF. Is his metabolism slowing down? Maybe breathing getting easier? Digestion changing? I dunno.

    Weird..

  • ryan gained almost the exact same amount of weight (and from 16 to 20lbs!) in about a month in a half. he's only 8 months though and is in the 75th percentile (on actual charts!) for height. i asked the doctor if she was worried about the insane weight gain and she said it wasn't a problem. HTH!
  • Wow!  That's more weight gain in a month than both C&E have ever gained combined!  But it's a good thing too.  This means you will likely just drop the number of hours he's being fed instead of the calories.  He needs the calories for sure, but soon he will be becoming more mobile and you'll see the weight staying more steady.  We went from being on the pump 22hrs/day to 18 hrs/day with two bolus feeds and that's been the trick for us to maintain the guys weight.  Also, we bought a scale for home use because we can't stand waiting to find out how we're doing when we go the appointments.  We weight the guys right before they go into the bath and then track it on a notebook.  As of Friday night Evan is 22lbs+ and Cameron is 26lbs+.  We are feeding them 30cal.  Evan gets about 720mls and Cam gets 820mls a day.
  • Laura- we have a scale at home, too. I was too paranoid when he first came home from the hospital not to have one. That's how I know he's gained so much.

Right now Robbie's feeding schedule is:

    12:30-6:30a, he gets 250ml @ 41ml/hour. That's 27calorie formula.

Then as soon as that goes off, I do his "breakfast" 175 ml of 25 calorie fortified breastmilk  at 45ml/hour, which usually finishes up about 10am.

Then 2, 6, & 9pm he gets more 175ml 25 calorie breastmilk. I do those at about 130ml/hour, so about an hour and 15 minutes per feeding. It keeps him from puking (well, mostly) , but is sort of a bolus feed.

I keep thinking he'll "grow into" his calories and the weight gain will slow down. It's just so weird to suddenly be on the other end of the scale.

I guess I'll see what the nutritionist says tomorrow. It would be nice to be able to leave him as he is  and start shortening the time it takes to get them in if he could tolerate it, but so far every time I try to speed him up, we get a ton more vomiting.

  • I bet you didn't think u were going over a year ago  ;)  It's a good problem to have...
