1st Trimester

Internal or External

I have my first u/s tomorrow, and I'm not sure what to expect.  I've heard a lot about the first (couple) of u/s being internal.  However, my doc gave me paperwork on how to prepare for the u/s, and it mentions drinking all that water like you would do for an external.  Do you have to do that for an internal also?

Thanx!

Re: Internal or External

  • Oddly enough, it sounds like you might be getting an external. When I was making my u/s appointment for 8 weeks, I was asked which one I wanted. I asked for the internal, and I had to empty my bladder beforehand. I think that if you were having an internal, they wouldn't tell you to drink a lot of water.

  • They told me over the phone to drink a lot of water before my first u/s at 8 weeks and then when I got there they had me give a urine sample and make sure my bladder was empty for my internal u/s.  Not sure but I think at 6 weeks you'd be internal.

  • I'd be surprised if they could see much with an external. How far along are you? Your siggy didn't say. I guess that's the big question.

EDIT: ok, I'm ad idiot. It does say. When I was 9 wks they tried to do an external but needed to switch to trans vag. which, frankly, I prefer (water makes me puke - I can't bear filling the bladder).

  • I just had my first u/s today and am measuring at 6w4d - which I knew because I o'd late. Anyway, I had an external u/s and was able to see the little munchkin and also see the flicker (aka the heartbeat) - it was awesome! I think it has a lot to do with the machine, and also what your practice usually does.
  • My first one was external (7w2d)

  • I am 6w4d today, so I will be 6w5d tomorrow at the u/s.

    I see it!

  • I feel like I'm alone here - at my first appt with the OB I ended up measuring early (5w 6d) and had an internal. I had a date confirmation appt at the hospital 8w 1d and was asked to consume 24 oz. of liquid an hour before, had an external, then emptied my bladder for an internal. . . I guess every place is different!
  • I had my first u/s on 7/25 and I knew it was going to be an internal, they didn't ask me to drink more water for it.
  • I just had my first one last week and I was 7 weeks 1 day along and baby was way to small for an external. They did an internal. It wasn't bad at all. the device is big and kind of scared me but it was not big deal when you get to see your baby. Good luck!
  • They also made me empty my bladder when they decided to do internal because they said it would be to uncomfortable.
  • Sounds like you are going to have an external. My first was an internal.
