Giving it up!

How did you all get your DC to give up their pacifier (soothie, binkie, bibble, etc).  We are trying to get him away from it, but with the teething it has been a nightmare for all of us.  It doesn't help that I have been traveling for work so much too.......just wondering if people went cold turkey, or limit to car and sleeping, etc........

Re: Giving it up!

  • For a while now, DS just uses it for his nap and bedtime.  I'm not having him get rid of it yet because he only has 3 teeth and will be starting day care soon.  I plan on going cold turkey though.  I've heard that's best.

  • We started with limiting the binkie to when we were in the car and at bedtime.  After a few weeks of that we went cold turkey with no problems.  I was really surprised at how easy it was - I was expecting a rough adjustment period but he never even missed it.  GL!
  • We were working on it but DD is cutting 4 of her top teeth right now. Pedi confirmed it at her appt last week. She only uses it for naps/night time so I decided to let it go. She was waking up for her paci at night and then her teeth were bothering her so we'd be up for an hour at a time. Gave the paci back and she is STTN. I figure we'll give it another go after these four teeth are in. GL!
  • We did cold turkey from a suggestion from DD's doctor.  It really wasn't as bad as we thought.  She was reallly attached to it.  We used the Ferber method and by the 2nd day, she was sleeping great!  Good luck to you!

DS just cut 3 of his top front 4 teeth this past week. The paci really helped him out. i just hope we can start to lessen the use.

  • My DS only uses the paci for sleeping so I'm not worried about dropping the paci yet.  My plan is to have him off the paci entirely by 18 mos and we'll do it cold turkey then.
  • DD hasn't used one since 7 months so I don't have personal experience, but my BFF had a technique that I planned on trying if the need arose. I don't know what she did at night, but during the day she would have a very small blanket on the floor. If her DD wanted a paci, she had to sit on the blankie...no books, no toys, just her and the paci. If she wanted to play, she had to leave the paci on the blanket. I don't think it took her long to give it up (at least during the day).
