Root canal during pregnancy?

I have to get a root canal tomorrow and I'm worried about the pain.  They obviously know that I'm pregnant and my doc sent over an info sheet on what I can and can't have.  I'm just scared that since they won't be able to use the strong stuff, I'll be able to feel it.  Has anyone else had to have one during pregnancy?

Re: Root canal during pregnancy?

  • they'll still use novacaine - they will just regular novacaine & typically they mix epi in with the novacaine to make it work faster. so it might just take you a little longer to go numb, but the dentist will know this & obviously wont start until you are numb. it wont be any more painful during the procedure, however, expect some achiness the next and tylenol really doesnt help imo (you need advil which you cant take). its not that bad. dont worry.

  • When I had my root canal last year, they gave me a ton of novacaine (which is fine when pg) and just needed Tylenol (also fine to use) for the limited soreness I had afterward.

  • I had a root canal at the very begininng of my pregnancy and they still gave me novacaine which is fine during pregnancy. I didnt have any pain after it wore off but you could always take Tylenol if it bothers you.
  • When I broke my wrist in 1st trimester, they gave me vicodan for the pain.

  • I had one while pregnant. It wasn't bad. They used certain novicane and I took a tylenol when it wore off.  It was easy. The hardest part was just keeping your mouth open that long.  You'll be fine.
  • I didn't have a root canal, but when I was about 16 weeks I had to get two crowns. They still used the numbing medcation (not sure which one) and I didn't feel a thing. Good luck!
  • Although I didn't have mine whilst pregnant, there was very little pain after the root canal. To be honest, it felt so much better afterward compared to the pain that led me to the dentist to have the root canal to begin with.

If you mention upfront to the dentist about being worried about pain, I think they concentrate more on explaining what they are doing to keep your mind at ease. Mine did at least, and it really helped.
