Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

15 Months Old-Not Walking

So our son is not showing any interest in walking.  I know no worries until 18 months, but what's concerning is as soon as we try and hold his hands to walk with him, he puts his legs in a sitting position.  He has no problems cruising all over.  Also no interest in the 'push' toys.  Anyone else been in this boat?  I just called Early Intervention to get the ball rolling if it should come to that.  Drs appt is next week. :(  I don't know what's wrong.

Re: 15 Months Old-Not Walking

  • C had no interest in walking, other than cruising, up until a few weeks ago.  Now, he's walking, unassisted, like a champ - at 17 months.  I wouldn't worry.

  • DD didn't start walking until 16 months.  Now we can't keep up with her! :)

  • DS#2 did the same exact thing at 15 months. He didn't start walking or showing any interest in standing by himself until 16 months. I, personally< don't think EI is needed yet. Some kids (like my DS) are just late walkers. They like to do things on their own time. We just "practiced" with him once or twice a day for 10 minutes and even bribed him with food :o) It eventually workend and now he is running all over the place.
  • DD will be 15 months on the 10th and JUST started walking a few steps here and there. Maybe 15 steps at the most. It was out of the blue. One day she wouldn't even walk one step, the next day she just got up and went.

  • DS is 13 and 1/2 months and the same way.  He could stand or take steps but he is too cautious.  If we try to let go of his waist or hold his hands he lets himself down to the floor.  He hates falling and won't try to take steps.  15 months is still early.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • DD is almost 16 months and isn't walking. A few weeks ago she started taking a few steps here and there (up to about 10 in a row but mostly just 3 or 4 in a row) but sometimes it's days in between. And when I ask her to walk she frowns and says "no mama"! She does love to use walkers and push things around but that only started at about 14 months. I wouldn't worry.
