Can you share your routines, tips, etc? there is so much conflicting info on how to "properly" wash and care for CDs that I'm a bit overwhelmed. We will be making our first purchase of diapers within the next week or two and switching our eleven month old. I'm trying to get prepared as best I can.
I will be using mostly prefolds, but will start out with a couple of BG OS pockets, too.
Thanks for your help.
ETA: He is on formula and has started table foods as well.
Re: CD washing routine?
The reason that info is so varied is that one routine really won't work for everyone. It depends on how hot your water is, if it's hard or soft water, etc... Soo.... FWIW here is my routine:
For anyone not EBF, you do need to get the poop off of the diaper (at least the majority) so we use flushable liners (although, I'm thinking of making some bigger fleece liners and just using that, as poop seems to come off those pretty easily).
Cold rinse, sometimes with vinegar
Hottest wash cycle we have - I also do a heavy wash, as we have a front loader, just so we get more water in there - w/ detergent and the rinse that goes along with that cycle.
1 additional cold rinse to make sure all the detergent is out.
That's our basic routine. The detergent you use and how much is something to play with if you're having issues - too much can lead to detergent buildup, and too little will obviously leave your diapers smelling stinky/unclean - kind of a barn smell, or gassy. You don't need to use as much as you would use for a regular load in your washer. Make sure you have a CD safe detergent. We use Planet, I've also seen Country Save, and 7th Generation Delicate (I believe) recommended. For a more complete list, visit www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com
HTH.
For poo once baby is on solids, I use a liner part of the time, and scrape the other part of the time. She only has about 1 dirty diaper a day.
I toss them in the wash. Do a cold prerinse. Do a regular hot wash with half scoop Country Save powder detergent. Do one more rinse.
Put most in the dryer and dry on high heat. Some I line dry (like the outer BG pocket shell).
I asked about this the other day here, hope this helps you!
