2nd Trimester

Sleeping on my stomach?

Pre-pregnancy, I typically slept on my stomach. I don't have much of a bump yet. I don't fall asleep on my stomach (I try not to), but I sometimes wake up on my stomach. Since it's still comfortable for me and I don't have much of a bump, is it ok to sleep on my stomach?

I know it'll get uncomfortable and I won't be able to do it as the pregnancy progresses and I get bigger, but for now it feels fine.

What do you think? I'm thinking it's okay for now, but I don't know. Does anyone else still sleep on their stomach?

Re: Sleeping on my stomach?

  • I slept on my stomach through the 18th week then it got more difficult.  My doctor said it was fine and when it became uncomfortable then I wouldn't do it anymore.

     You're fine.

  • I primarily sleep on my stomach.  My doctor said my body would "let me know" when I needed to start switching things up.  HTH!  :)
  • The ob told me it is fine to stomach sleep until week 16-18.  She said that I would prob start to feel the baby moving while I'm on my stomach.  She told me that my body would let me know when I couldn't sleep on my belly anymore.
  • I still sleep half on my stomach, half on my side and wake up sometimes on my stomach. I have a bump, but it doesn't hurt so my OB said it's fine. She said it will hurt when it's time to stop.

  • Yes, I do and yes, it's fine. Smile

When it's uncomfortable, it's not OK anymore, so you're good!

I have been able to prolong my tummy sleeping by putting a pillow under my hips and one under my chest thereby creating a "pocket" for my belly so baby is not squished...it seems to have worked so far!

  • I was able to sleep on my stomach until about 17 weeks, then it wasn't comfortable. my doc said it's fine until it starts to get uncomfy then to stop. i found an easy transition was to  sleep half on my side with half my belly on a pillow. now i'm able to sleep on my side with no issues unless my LO decides to start kickin me ;)

  • This weekend, DH and I bought new pillows.  The one I got was for stomach sleepers.  I didn't even really think that I probably won't be able to sleep on my stomach for much longer!  DUH!

  • You're fine. Your body will let you know when it's no longer comfortable. At 21w, I still sleep on my stomach from time to time, although it's becoming uncomfortable and I can usually feel the baby moving.
  • I'm still sleeping on my stomache but now I *** off to the side some and put one leg up a little.  My doc said my body will tell me when I can't do it anymore-it will hurt or be very uncomfortable.  The last 2 nights were the 1st time I have not been comfy that way-so I think those days are about over for me, but yes-trust your doc and trust that your body will tell you when its time to change positions.

pretty much the same thing I use a regular pillow between my legs and kinda sleep some what on my belly/side. I haven't had any issues and normally i can sleep well thru the night.

  • Hi there...

Yeah, I'm totally a belly sleeper too... It hasn't become uncomfortable until recently.  Now I have a body pillow, and cuddle that while I'm angled on my side/stomach with 1 leg up.  Anything to prolong it as long as I can!!! :o
