Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Time Out?

I am doing some research right now but I would love your opinions.  When do they understand time out?  At what age does it teach them anything?

DS#1 is throwing everything and hitting as well.  I feel like scooping him up and putting him in his room for time out sometimes.  I am assuming 18 months is too young.

Re: Time Out?

  • well we are a month younger and i just posted something about this.  I have been reading they say you can start between 18 m - 2 years.   Heres the article i just read a moment ago.

  • Thanks- that's a great article.
  • Our pedi recommended for major things (like unplugging things in outlets) to do a 1 minute per age. She either sits in my lap and I explain what she did that was acceptable and tell her not to do that or she sits in the bumbo (where she can't get out) and I sit in front of her explaining the situation. The pedi said she may or may not completely "get it" but she understands that the action had a consequence and to continue and follow through as she gets older. This makes sense to me so that is what we have been doing.
  • We've been doing timeout for probably 4 months or more. I think sometimes its effective and sometimes... not. But it definitely seems to be working more and more now. We pick our battles, hitting/biting, turning off the tv, throwing stuff.... you get the idea. He understands now though. Sometimes after an immediate second offense, he puts himself back in timeout. We keep him in timeout for 1 minute.

  • We have been using time out for a few months now and it is very effective.  We give DS three warnings with redirection and by the third time we let him know if he keeps it up he will go into time out.  Most of the time he stops but if he persists he is sent to time out for a minute.  We use it maybe three times a week at most.  HTH
