do you use unpaper towels?

Do you use them for things like setting bacon and other stuff on too? Do they work well for it?

Are they absorbent for cleaning up spills?

and finally...

who did you buy them from, I'm thinking of making the switch. Or if you have advice on what to make them from, I bet I could even make some myself.

Re: do you use unpaper towels?

  • I just use cheap washcloths or flour sack (Tea Towels) for mine.  I love them for spills and cleaning up babies, but we keep a roll of paper towels around for bacon.  My thinking is I can't necessarily wash the grease out all the way and don't want to risk a fire when they go in the dryer.

I have also made some napkins for DH out of terry cloth and quilters cotton, which he loves.  I have more planned, but we'll see if they ever happen!

  • Not yet, but I'm working on it right now to make some out of quilter's cotton and terry cloth.
  • We just have a ton of washclothes that we use instead of paper towels.  I picked them up cheaply at Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond a while ago.  I use them for everything - wiping up spills on the floor, wiping up the table, counters, etc.  They work even better than paper towels and I go through a lot a day.  I then wash them every 3 days or so before we run out.

  • For bacon and other fried foods, I use a cooling rack over a cookie sheet. I really like this, as it seems to keep the breading of fried foods crispier than putting it on a paper towel.
  • We use cheap Gerber muslins that my mom gave us. I tend to wash diapers every day and just wash them together, so 12 do us fine. I love htem in place of paper towels, though still use paper for greasy things.
