Dry scalp?

My baby has dry flakes on her scalp starting on the top of her head going forward to her hairline.  I looked up cradle cap but the description of that was greasy, scaly flakes and that's definitely not what this looks like.  Could it be an issue with the Johnson's baby shampoo? We first noticed the flakes yesterday morning, we gave her a bath and washed her hair in the afternoon and the flakes almost disappeared.  Then this morning they are back worse than yesterday.  Any ideas?

Re: Dry scalp?

  • My DS had a really dry scalp.  Not greasy or anything just flaky skin.  That was 2 weeks ago and he does not have it anymore.  I didn't do anything to treat it.  It ran it's course and he is fine!  I figured it was probably like the dry skin he had on other places of his body that just needed to be shed!

  • I do find that Johnsons is a bit drying.  If the dryness flares up on my LO's head, I give a wipe of Mustela no rinse cleansing fluid and it takes care of it.

  • I had to start using conditioner on DS. His scalp is just like mine - super dry. The conditioner cleared it up w/in two baths.

  • I'm a pediatric derm PA...and DD has dry scalp too; Cradle cap or seb derm is usally yellow, greasy, flakes, so you would know...although the dry scalp can be a very early sign of cradle cap, but usually cradle cap doesn't hit until 3 months, but obviously its different for everyone. Anyways, don't use Johnson & Johnson's products...they have too many chemicals. Use something sensitive like CeraVe or Cetaphil...use the cleansers (they have no smell) and the creams to moisturize. I would moisturize DD's scalp with this, although, if she has hair, it will be a little greasy. If your LO doesn't have any other skin issues, its okay to use Aveeno (soap/shampoo in one) because it smells a lot nicer than CeraVe and Cetaphil (I use Aveeno on my DD). If it gets worse or progresses to cradle cap, use OTC hydrocortisone cream 2x day for 2-3 weeks!

  • DD had a really dry scalp a couple of weeks ago - it wasn't enough to be cradle cap, but still dry and flaky.  I started using baby Aveeno's essential moisture shampoo and it went right away.  GL!
