Do you have an emergency food and water stash?

My paper was saying you should have a 2 month stash due to the second wave of the flu pandemic that is suppose to hit in the fall. ?Whenever there are these types of warnings I always think I really should just make a stash in the basement but I never do. ?
I think I should just do it for the peace of mind. ?
Do you have emergency food and water supply??

Re: Do you have an emergency food and water stash?

  • I should add, I am not overly concerned about the flu. ?I am speaking more generally and was just reminded of this while reading the paper this morning.?
  • We have TONS of food in the basement.  As for water...nope.  We have probably a weeks stash of water only because my DH buys bottled water...but we use it too.

Why would you need a stash because of the flu?  I don't get that.  Do they think people won't go out at all?  I mean we still have to go to work!

  • I have no idea. ?I think they are assuming you won't go out if it becomes serious enough. ?Or perhaps that you and your family will be sick and need to stay in. ?I don't know! ?
  • No I don't and never will. We have no place to store that much food and water.
  • We don't...although every few months something will make me think of it and I'll add "make emergency kit" to my mental to-do list...and then never get around to doing it.

I just read an article about it too. It was saying you should have canned foods with pop tops, pack a manual can opener just in case too, enough bottled water for 1 gal/person/day, pet food and supplies, sanitary items and diapers/wipes, hand crank radio or flashlight and/or battery operated with lots of batteries, plastic sheeting, duct tape, those fabric masks you put over your face to prevent spread of disease and any prescription or emergency meds.

It also said you should have a designated meeting place in case you're not all at home when disaster strikes and you should also keep a pair of comfy shoes in your office that you could walk several miles in (assuming you wear something like heels or dress shoes to work normally) and some cash for gas or food.

Oh...and it recommended a minimum of 3 days worth of emergency supplies on hand for each family member.

  • Certainly not 2 months worth but I have enough for a week, maybe.  I have no idea how I'd buy and store enough for 2 months.
