Do you cut your kids' hair?

How did you learn to do it? I paid $20 for DD's first haircut and it was a PITA. make appointment, go there, wait, sit while they cut, pay leave. Took forever and I had DD2 with me who by now is so much bigger and won't just sit still in an infant carrier anymore.

Short of it - I want to do this myself. I have cut DH's hair a couple of times a while back and he thinks I did a great job and he'd much rather save the time of going to the barber also...

so I want to order scissors and possibly a book on how to do it somewhere. Any ideas?

Re: Do you cut your kids' hair?

  • I just suck it up and take them.  It's  PITA for me, but they loooove going to see Miss Dena at her salon.  She makes a big to-do out of it and all the ladies there shower them with attention.  They gets sparkles in their hair and the whole nine yards.  I don't think I'd dare do it myself...
  • I cut DS's hair.  I also cut MH's hair, but he doesn't have much so that's not hard.  I just figured that no one is going to be able to do a perfect job on a moving target, so I'd rather mess it up for free than pay $20+ for someone else to mess it up!

  • I did it once and never ever again.  I take them to a kid's hair place.  It's like $15 each and they're done in less than 5 minutes.  I've even had DD#2's done a few times and they were done in less than 2 minutes with her.  I just wanted a tiny trim to get it to grow (and yes, it worked).  I do DD#2's every 6+ months and DD#1's closer to every 3 months.  It's worth the $15 for us...but I can't cut a straight line in paper so I'm definitely not the best one to ask.
  • I have been taking DS nearly monthly since he was 11 months old, and it's ridiculous.

I tried to cut it once, and ended up cuttin his ear with the first cut.  My hair girl cuts his now, and she only charges me every now and then.  Since I am a brunette trying to be a blonde this summer, I am there a lot, and spending a small fortune.

  • I cut DS's.  But he has curly hair so if I mess it up it's not too noticeble and I still think I do a better job then the salon.  I've gotten pretty good at it though!

  • I trim DS's hair every few weeks b/c it grows so fast, but take him in to Great Clips for a cheap haircut to even it out every few months.  I bought haircutting scissors at WalMart, he sits on a blanket in the living room and watches a movie while I do it.  It takes me about 5 minutes and is pretty easy.  I just watched the haircutter do it a few times and kind of do it how she did.
