Yeah, they were a pretty significant part of the college scene. I wasn't in one but was friends with a lot of people who were, so I spent plenty of time at frat parties.
Kap - what Big 10 school did you go to? I'm a Boilermaker.

So so. Lots of my friends were in them; I pledged then dropped out. Ironically I was voted "best new pledge", lol. I dropped when I didn't want to pay fines for missing meetings. Just wasn't worth it.

Boiler up!
And ditto E, Greek was pretty big where I went. I think it has one of the larger (top 10?) Greek systems in the country.
Yes, I went to a small private college ( about 1000 students, of which only 500 lived on campus) in a small town. Suffice to say, there was nothing else to do but go greek. Phi Mu, Hell Yeah!
I went to a Big 10 university as well with a large Greek system, but my friends and I just weren't into that scene at all.
My dh went to a small private liberal arts school where pretty much everyone (I think it's upwards of 90%) joins a sorority or fraternity. My dh belonged to the frat that was basically a non-frat, LOL.
Nope. But I was in one anyway. We couldn't even have houses as sororities because of this law in Milwaukee dating back to the 19th century that classified any house with more than six women of a different last name living together as a whore house!
The law has since been changed, but not until after I graduated.

We had one "service" fraternity open to men & women. The typical Greek system was banned by the Pope at my school back in the 1960s.
We had APO on campus as well. We always said they take the R out of Greek. LOL . Sad, but they were the people that would not be able to join sororities/frats and they treated their new pledges poorly.
DH was in a frat (sig pi) but I didn't join a sorority. I didn't have the time with my major and working on campus.

MI has a similar law...but we had a "house mother". Apparently her supervision prevented the whoring.

I'm going to guess that you either went to MU or UWM. You don't have to confirm that, but I PROMISE I'm not a stalker.

there was a fairly large Greek life- but since my college was so huge- it wasn't like you had to be Greek to have any fun like at some schools. I am a Delta Gamma.... from Univ of South Florida.
Yes, there was a very 'big' greek presence where I went to school. I rushed and made it all the way to bid day. I had several bids from sororities I liked but bailed because my heart wasn't in it. I saw girls that were bawling because they didn't get in to the ones they wanted and I couldn't give a sh!t so I figured it wasn't right for me.
Worked out for the best though because I met my DH in the dorms
Re: Were sororities/frats big on your campus?
Yep.
H and I were both in them.
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.

All of my gf's that went to big 10's were in a sorority. It was definitely fun to visit.?

At least you didn't say IU or U of M. Those are my top most hated. LOL.
MSU is a great school and their fans are pretty nice. I loathe IU and well I'm sure I don't have to tell you how annoying U of M fans are.

UW fans can be pretty rough too. But that might just be because they are so rarely sober.
Then again, they don't have breakfast club, so I'm not sure we can comment on being sober either :-)
