Rolling Over Onto Belly While Sleeping

Samantha started rolling over (and over and over!) this past weekend...this week has been horrible trying to get her to sleep and stay asleep! She is constantly rolling herself onto her stomach and fussing herself awake! Uggh! Any suggestions/tips?! I am terrified of SIDS and am kinda freaking out about this tummy sleeping! :)

Re: Rolling Over Onto Belly While Sleeping

  • Bree did that when she first starting rolling over, it wasn't fun because she woke up constantly at night. Eventually she would roll over and not wake herself up. I am with you though, I was terrified of SIDS because of her rolling. We don't have a bumper pad and we wouldn't put a blanket in the crib with her so we felt better about it. Don't worry it will get better!!
  • Bennett did this for a while (and actually still does every once in a while). I don't have any tips, but just wanted to let you know he hardly ever does it anymore. He just grew out of it, I guess. He'd roll himself into the corner and get stuck and frustrated. It only lasted a couple weeks. Now it very rarely happens!

  • When my girls first started to roll over they did this same thing. Roll onto the belly while sleeping and they would feel stuck and wake up screaming all night long. It was tough, but it didn't take long for them to get the hang of it and finally feel comfortable with being on their belly. Since then, that is the only way they will sleep.

They sell sleep positioners where there are bump type things on both sides of the baby so they can't roll over while sleeping, not sure if this is something you are interested in. You could also give it a few weeks and she will figure it out. Good luck!

  • Ben started sleeping on his belly as soon as he got good at rolling over. It really hasn't bothered him, but it freaked DH & I out because of the SIDS thing. I know it's not a big risk now that he can roll himself back over, and we don't have any bumpers, but we still go in and check that he's breathing :)

  • We called the Ped yesterday b/c I was terrified of the whole SIDS thing and they said to continue putting her asleep on her back but if she rolls over, she is ok to stay that way. Now that she can roll and lift head up as good as she is, she would be able to move if she needed to.

Thanks for all the thoughts and advice...and for many of you having the same worry I did! :)
