What is DHA? (Spin off from Prenatal Vit Post)

I read the vitamin post from earlier and noticed that everyone kept mentioning the need for DHA. What is this? I take the OTC pre-natal vitamins sold at Wal Mart....I went and read the label and there is no mention of DHA.

  • It's like an Omega 3 fatty acid I think.  It's for the baby's brain/eye development.  Some prenatals have one, but if yours doesn't mention it you can pick up a product called Expecta (made by Enfamil), which is a non-fish source of DHA.  My doctor recommended that to me.
  • I use the over the counter Expecta DHA pills, in addition to my prenatal vitamins.  It is about $13.99 for a month's worth.
  • I take the CVS brand prenatal pack, which includes a multivitamin and a DHA supplement.  My OB says that the generic is fine.

  • DHA is for brain and eye development. For you and baby.

I take a DHA supplement every day.

  • Thanks guys! My OB never mentioned this to me at all when we talked about prenatal vitamins. Just thought I'd see what it was and if I was the only one not taking it :)
