I would like to do it but I heard a rumor that you can only use it on siblings.???? Does anyone know? The rumor doesn't seem logical to me, but I'm not a medical doctor either.
I've researched it a lot. The rumor is kind of true. It's not that the blood can only be used for siblings, but the chances of being able to use child A's cord blood for child A is very small. What happens is that the DNA/cells in that blood are "programmed" for whatever the child is being treated for, so pumping in more of the "tainted" blood is ineffective. Most of the time the blood is more useful/successful for siblings. There are some conditions where that specific child's own cord blood can be used but it's a small percentage (I don't remember the exact number). Does that make sense??
