MoMs: Bottle and Breast Pump recs.

I am already thinking about bottles and a breast pump.  If you have any suggestions of type, quantity, and necessesity, I would love to hear what you have to say!  Thanks a million :)

Re: MoMs: Bottle and Breast Pump recs.

  • My girls aren't here yet, but what I've learned over the years is that Avent is a great bottle and is very like the breast, so that is what I'm going to use.  The pump depends on how often you plan on pumping.  If you're going to rarely pump, a manual one might be alright but if you're going back to work, you will want a double electric one.  Medela is the brand that hospitals rent out and is a great brand.  Hope that helps.

Are you really from Upstate NY or just out of the city upstate?  I'm originally from Western NY and used to consider it upstate until I learned alot of people call the region near the city upstate.  Just being nosey.  Big Smile

  • We love the Dr. Brown's bottles -- I think that they're why we've never had a big problem with gas.

As for a pump, rent one from the hospital.  I rented the Medela Symphony and bought the PIS, and I wish I had just rented -- the Symphony was so much better, and I didn't end up pumping long enough (it's a huge task with more than one!) to make it worth the money to buy one, IMO.

  • We also have the Dr. Browns BPA free bottles and many of the MoMs on this and other boards use them. They are more expensive though, but IMO worth it. We have around 20 of them and honestly I could use more. We bought Evenflo and I just use those to pump into. Definitely get more of the 8 oz vs the 4oz because they will grow out of those pretty quickly.

    ?

As far as a pump I also use the Medela Pump In Style and I like it. I did get it from a friend so no initial investment, but I pump probably 60-70oz/day on it. I have no experience with the other pumps though.

I am from Kingston, which is about 1 1/2 north of NYC.  I always consider Kingston the lowest part of "Upstate".  Anything below has really become a suburb or NYC.  MY SIL is from Western NY, though.  She used to live between Buffalo and Niagara.  :)

  • We are currently using the AVENT Tempo system (the disposable bags)... I know bad for the environment but so much easier with twins at a Boy Scout Camp to only have to clean nipples and tops... when we get home we will be using the regular AVENT bottles... or the Playtex Ventaire wide.. my boys don't like the thin bottles like the regular ventaire or Dr. Browns

If your babies aren't here I would wait and buy a few of each kind to see what kind your babies are going to like... and then buy a few of the small size and lots of the big size... we currently go through 16 nipples during the day and could probably use more because sometimes I have to wash nipples in the middle of the day.

  • I rented a Medela Lactina (hospital-grade) and I think it worked well. I don't have any other pump experience to compare it to though. ;)
As for bottles, we liked Playtex VentAire. Especially when our boys were gassy little newborns, they seemed to do much better with the VentAires. Now we use a variety of cheaper bottles (Gerber and I forget what else) mixed in with the VentAires.

  • I would say at first to rent a hospital grade pump from the hospital.  It helped so much with getting my supply going and it was a much more efficient pump if you ask me!  I bought the medela freestyle after 1 month of using the hospital pump.  It took some getting used to , but I love it now.  It is hands free, so I can go online when I am pumping in the morning which is nice.  It is also super small and portable, which will be nice for when I go back to work.

As far as bottles, we have been using the Dr. Brown's bottles from the beginning and have not had any trouble with them.  Neither baby seems to have excessive gas after bottles.
