  • I have the Canon Eos Rebel XSI - it's an amazing camera and takes fantastic pics. DH did lots of research before buying and came up with this as the best non-professional level camera. It's easy to use, too.

  • Not sure how much you want to spend but I agree with the pp.  Cannons are great cameras.  DH researched it a lot and they have the best lens.

  • I owned two Canon SLRs in the past and had issues with both so when I decided to buy my first DSLR last month, I went with a Nikon.  I bought the D90 with an 18-105 mm kit lense and I absolutely love it.  It's on the pricey side and I nearly chose the new D5000 b/c it is a couple hundred dollars cheaper and has a lot of the same features, but I absolutely love it!  I'm taking a photography class now and it takes such amazing pictures and provides a lot of flexibility if you really want to put it in manual and use all of the features.

I don't know how much you are wanting to spend but we have a Canon 5D and absolutely LOVE it!  The picture quality is amazing and there is so much you can control with this camera.  The good lenses are on the pricey side but every picture looks very professional.

  • I just bought my husband a DSLR for his 30th b-day. We ended up getting a Nikon D-40. It is great camera for family pictures. One of the thing I love most is how lightweight it is.

My Dad has a D-90 and while it has a few features that are missing on the D-40, they aren't things that the average family picture taker would notice. We love it and the price was really reasonable.

  • I just purchsed a Canon G10 a few months ago and am loving it! It's sort of Hybrid SLR, but it's great. I can't wait to get some extra lens / flash.
  • I have the Nikon D60. I love it! You can spend a little less on the D40, or a little more and get the D90. I'm super satisfied with my camera.

To research a little more - go to flickr.com and see the  Camera Finder It lets you see what kind of photos are taken by each camera. I found it invaluable when we were shopping for our D60 as well as our Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.

But seriously, look around Flickr and see what kind of photos non-professionals are taking with their DSLRs - it will help you out a lot!!

  • My favorite has always been Canon, and the EOS line is great. I've never owned one myself (because I'm too cheap to buy it), but I love the picture quality of a Canon.

I have used a Nikon D70 for work. It's a good one, just a different style of image than you'd get with a Canon.

  • I have a Canon Rebel XTi (the older version of the XSi) that I've had for over a year and I LOVE it.  Almost every photo from my blog was taken with it.  My biggest recommendation for buying a camera is to go to the store and try them out (even if you end up buying online, which is what I did because it was way cheaper) so that you can see what feels good in your hand.  I was considering a Nikon D80 but found it was too bulky in my hands for me to feel comfortable with it - the XTi was perfect for me, but isn't for everyone.
  • I have a Nikon D40 and am very happy with it.  For me it made more sense to go with a less-espensive, lighter-weight camera body and then put more money toward getting a good lens.
  • I have always heard rave reviews about Nikon. I personally have a Nikon D40, that is wonderful! It isn't the highest megapixel, but it takes great pictures. I would highly recommend it!
  • I have a Sony a350 and I love it. It has a built in image stabilizer which most other brands do not. The model I have is 14.2 megapixels...it came with everything you need to start taking awesome pics..my friend has the canon rebel and that is also a good camera.
