moving all around crib during sleep

does anyone else's LO move all around the crib while sleeping at night?

mine stays in her swaddle for the most part, though she does manage to kick her legs or one arm out occasionally, and literally does circles in her crib, while asleep.  or we'll put her to sleep towards the top of her crib, and we'll find that she's manuevered down to the bottom during the night, all while swaddled and sleeping.  the only problem is that now that she's getting bigger, she got turned around 90 degrees last night, so she was laying width-wise across the crib, with her head touching one side.  will a sleep positioner help this?  not sure what else to do?!  her grunting also keeps me up when she's in our room (on vacation or at my parents' home)... ug.  any advice?

Re: moving all around crib during sleep

  • Yep, DD does this.  I put as low in the crib as I can, because she'll push up with her legs, even swaddled.  That's usually why she wakes up, because she's against the edge of the crib.

We just let her do it.  She sleeps fine otherwise, and she doesn't seem to do it as much in the bassinet of her PNP when we're traveling.

  • No advice but our DS does this too...I'll check on him a couple times after he goes down and each time he's in a different place and in the morning he's usually close to the edge at the bottom of the crib.  LOL  It's kind of funny actually.  He's not rolling yet so I'm not too worried.  Once he starts rolling I might have to get a positioner.

  • I put DD in a sleep positioner to avoid that...If your going to keep her swaddled I would def. recommend a positioner, you dont want her to flip over (if shes moving that much) while swaddled.
  • Mine did this and still does. It was when i got rid of the swaddle- she flipped over with it on and it freaked me out.

Now she stretches out, moves around and became a belly sleeper around 5-6 months.

I would personally never do a sleep positioner at that age. I think it is limiting and no reason for it. just my opinion.

  • ds does this.  we have to put him towards the bottom of the crib, because he scoots his way to the top.  he yells when he reaches the end so we can move him.
  • DS does this even with the positioner and while swaddled! He takes the poistioner with him! It is crazy! I asked my pedi about it and he said there isn't a whole lot I can do about it. I put the breathable bumper in so at least he won't hurt himself or get stuck.
  • DD is a belly sleeper and is all over as well. I have found her with her face smooshed up against the side of the crib but breathing just fine. Do you have a video monitor? I can see her breathing on it, so that is always my stress reliever!  FWIW she would wiggle down into a positioner and smoosh her face in that. I would rather her get her head pushed up against the slats in the crib then a cottony positioner. JMO
  • BTW- they don't hurt themselves in a safe crib (no bumpers)- i took out the positioners- put a breathable bumper on part of it but never used the bumpers that matched her room. I never wanted her face smushed against anything for breathing issues.

She has bonked her head, stuck her limbs through the slats, kicked the slats, etc- and LOUD. She was totally fine. Seriously- one night, I heard her and walked in and she was banging her head on the crib. I thought i was dreaming. she never did it again and was completely unfazed.

They can't do anything strong enough in the crib to hurt themselves and its ok for them to move around. I had a long talk with pedi because i was worried myself.

  • omg, i had no idea it was so common, thank you!
  • Our lo did this and she moved so much she rolled herself over while swaddled one night.  That was the end of the swaddle.  Our ped said no more swaddling if she can roll in it.  I wouldn't do a sleep positioner because if she is that mobile is likely to roll right over it and then might end up with her face against it.  I am not really worried about her hurting herself, I just know that she can not have anything in the crib with her.  I think its funny to see where she will be each time I check.  And it never wakes her up.
