this is probably more than you want to know... I used to sell Prevacid- so i know these drugs very well.
Zantac is an H2blocker... it blocks the histamine receptor on the proton pump - which is where acid is produced. By blocking this receptor it decreases the amount of acid the pump produces--- but there are still 2 other receptors that are active- so there is still acid produced.
Prevacid is a PPI- proton pump inhibitor - meaning, it shuts down the pump all together so it can not produce acid. It will not shut down ALL pumps - which is good because your body needs a certain amount of acid to metabolize foods, etc.... but it will decrease it significantly.
PPIs shut down the pumps forever... but your body creates new pumps approx every 24 hours- hence, why the indicated dose is taken once/day at the same time each day.
some people create pumps faster - which is why docs will dose more than once/day for some people.
PPIs work better than H2blockers --- but pedis generally will start a baby on an H2blockers b/c they feel it's "less medicine" or "safer" when in reality- H2blockers have more side effects than PPIs. (though both types of drugs are considered very safe and have few s/e)
PPI's are a "class of drug" - meaning their meds work by doing the same thing- but each PPI might work different for any given person, b/c we are human and drugs work different in each of us. The common PPIs are Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec, Aciphex and Protonix. The 2 newest are Kapidex and Zegerid.
H2RAs are a separate class of drug - including Zantac, Pepcid, Axid, etc.
Re: zantac vs. prevacid
They are different.

My LO was on zantac first & it didn't help b/c we couldn't keep it down with her, she HATED the taste...even when we put it in her bottle.
Now prevacid is working pretty good. Shes on 30 instead of 15.. she sucks on it as we squirt it in, tastes better so it stays down!
Thanks Goldie Locks.... I wondered what the differences were!
