How would you say this name?

For a girl - Braelyn or Braelynn

It's the only girl name we have so far (we're still on team green).  Once a few people respond, I'll let on how we picked it.  We've actually had this name since we were dating as vomitous as that sounds.

    I think it's a great name!

  • Is that a real name?

Brae means hillside in Scotland and is pronounced "bray"

So Bray-lynn?  I'm still not sure that's a real name.

This is what I would assume.  But I don't like how you spell it. It makes it unpronounceable.

Whether it's a name that they "made up" or found somewhere, it's very cute! Sometimes I wonder if I'm making certain names up that I think of.. But isn't that how all names came to be? Someone had to think of it..

  • Thanks, everyone!  That's the answer I was hoping for.

Ok so now where it came from:  my husband is a huge Cleveland Browns fan and I started watching the games with him when we were dating.  Now I'm big into it as well.  One of their star players is Braylon Edwards, but the way the announcers would always say it, it sounded more like Bray-lynn and we just always liked it that way.  Flame away!  People name their kids after much weirder things (like London, Brooklynn, etc for the place of conception!).

Melaina25 - Is Melaina your first name?  If so, I'm not sure that's a real name either. Stick out tongue  I'm not trying to name my kid Apple or Coco here... just something that sounds pretty and has some meaning for us.

  • My best friend just had a little girl in March and her name is Braelyn. I had never heard of it before that and they actually got it from a football players last name in the NFL. It is prounounced bray-lyn. Very pretty and unique.

How is it unpronounceable if you think it would be pronounced this way?  I just don't like having the two "y"s in it so close together.

Oh that's so funny!  Maybe it's really the first name and is from the same player as ours.  Are you from Ohio? lol

  • I would pronounce it Bray-lynn.

  • I would also pronounce it Bray-Lynn.  I think it's a beautiful name and I like the Braelyn spelling the best.  I think it's great that you found a name you both agree on that has meaning for you.  Plus it's beautiful and original.  I think it's a definite go for a girl!  Now what are you going to do about coming up with a boy name that is just as original?!

It's just on you have it spelled.  I had to look a few time and guess that Bray-Lynn was the right way to say it.

You gotta know that this name is going to be hard some people especially when you have to post something on how you would pronounce this.

I'm not saying at all that it's a bad name.

  • I really like it.  And I totally agree, who cares if it's somewhat made up?  I'm all for the original names.  I've actually heard of Braelynn quite a bit, but only bc I am always looking for unusual or unique names.

    Good luck on your pregnancy!

Are you serious?  Because every response that I've read so far and I haven't read all of them, are showing it pronounced the exact.same.way.  Doesn't seem to fit your "spelling it the way you are makes it unpronounceable" theory.

Thanks, Icka!  We also liked it because it has a gaelic feel and we're Irish.  For a boy, we're thinking something like Eamon or Brandon.  Eamon is the gaelic version of my husband's name, and we're not the type to go "Jr." so we're leaning towards that one.  Not quite as good of a story (hopefully DD would be a good sport about being named for an NFL player!) but good enough for us I think.

I see your point.  Thanks for your note.  I guess I just figure that most people have to spell their names for others for one reason or another.  Our last name is pretty self explanatory, so having a first name that's a bit different would only mean one to spell!  I have a very common first name myself but it can be spelled with a C or K so I always have to say which it is.

  • 1) Melaina is not my IRL name and it is an actual name.

    2) If you don't know how to pronounce it or you made it up that doesn't constitute a real name to me.

    3) You asked for opinions, so you should be prepared to get not positive comments.

What makes Melaina a real name while Braelynn isn't?  Just a thought.  I looked and Melaina is not one of the top 1000 baby girl names in the last 50 years, while Braelyn makes the cut for the last 3 years.

I know it's not a common thing and some would consider it "made up."  I just wanted to see if the majority of people would view it the same way as we do, and it seems they do so that's good enough for me.

I'm all for constructive criticism.  I just don't get your "it's not a real name" point.  Thanks for contributing.

She asked for peoples opinions.  People gave it to her.  SHUT IT

Who cares if it is real or made up.  IF you like it and you have a girl, use it.  Honestly, what we think should effect you decision to name your child.

It could be the first name! I know it was definitely from a football player in the NFL! I will have to tell her that I found another Braelyn! That is neat! We are all from PA but her DH may like that team or player, I'm not sure!

So Bray-lynn?  I'm still not sure that's a real name.

I agree with you.  It sounds like a made-up name that people use to be overly unique, like naming your kid lemonjello or orangejello (I know that's not how thay spelled the names, but does it really make a difference?)  When I first saw it my train of thought went like this: Brae sounds like hay, which is what horses eat...so she's naming her child after a barnyard animal?  That doesn't seem right.  The Lynn part is kind of pretty.

Don't bother flaming me I'm never going to go back and re-read this.  It'll be a waste of your time.

LOL that is one effed up train of thought.

FWIW, I don't agree with the "not a real name" argument, ALL names had to be made up by someone at some point. How old does a name have to be (how long ago was it made up) for it to become real?

  • My friends daughters name is Brealyn, I think it's a cute name and it's not common at all.

My thoughts exactly.  And who cares if someone does make up a name?  A lot of people on here told me our girl name (Adleigh) is made-up.  It was by someone, but not by us.  We saw it somewhere and loved it.  I don't care if someone thinks something is "made-up" or spelled "wrong."

I'd pronounce it Bray-Lynn.  I like it, but we can't use anything with Lyn/Lynn in it.  House rule.

I don't think it's a real name, either... Braelyn just looks and sounds like a made-up name a little girl would give her imaginary unicorn friend.

And Neveah is a top name, and that's totally made-up!! Just because something's popular, doesn't make it good... look at how many Britney Spears albums have been sold!

  • Bray-LYNN, emphasis at the end
  • I think it is a beautiful name!! I love names that have the "ae" in them, my sisters names are Shaelyn and Kaedyn and I absolutely LOVE their names!

I am naming my daughter Raegan, and everyone tried telling me I was spelling it wrong and should spell it Reagan.  I get so annoyed when people tell me "it's not a real name" or "you're spelling it wrong" LOL who the hell are you to tell me I am spelling my child's name incorrectly!?

BTW we are irish too, going for the whole gaelic thing (if you couldn't tell)

Hi!  We live in Jersey, but my H is originally from near Erie.  There's actually a Browns Backers group out here in North Jersey that we've been involved with a little bit if you can believe it.  Unfortunately they're not playing the Jets, Giants, or Eagles this year so we may not get to a game for the first time in a long time.  Thinking about taking a babymoon to Cleveland though!
