Prevacid solutabs

Anyone's LO taking this?  I am having the hardest time getting it dissolved enough.  The pedi said give it in 2-3 cc's of water.  Last night I put it in a nipple, and the medicine just clogged the nipple.  I ended up having to add milk, but it took about 10 minutes to get the medicine down!  This morning I tried a syringe, and it just seemed to get stuck to the sides.  I don't want to add any more water.  Any ideas are appreciated!

  • i used to sell prevacid - and my DS is also on it... here's my advice.

    it's tricky :)

you need an oral syringe - one that shoots it like a needle - not a dropper type.  Take the back off- put the solutab in - draw up some water and shake it until it's dissolved.

It will not 100% dissolve - there will be tons of little microgranules - that is the active drug and what is most important to get into baby.... make sure these do not get crushed/chewed b/c it will make them inactive (and also taste bitter).

what i do is shake it until dissolved- then hold my finger over the hole and hold it upside down until all the little microgranules are in the very tip of the syringer... you have to swirl it around a little to do this and get them from sticking to the sides.  Then i put it into DS's mouth and give it a little at a time- so he doesn't just thrust it all out with his tongue.

you will need to draw up a little more water and repeat to get the rest off the sides of the syringe... this is how it is indicated to do - it's a TINY amount of water - no reason not to do this.  For a 15mg solutab the indicated amounto f water is 5ml, doing it twice.  For a 30mg solutab it's indicated to use 10ml.  The actual amount is not a huge deal- but just to show you it's a tiny amount of water if you compared it to using another type of liquid med.

You can do it with formula- but then you can't really see if all the microgranules are off the sides easily b/c it's not clear.

i would not give via nipple - unless you are using a faster flow- it will just clog like you said.

also- it will work best if you give it 1/2 hour before feeding, so it has time to get into the blood stream before baby eats.  If this is not possible- giving with a bottle is fine- but if you find it's not working great- the timing may be why.

    hope this helps!

  • Thanks!  This sounds pretty similar to what I tried with the syringe this morning.  My pedi has me splitting a 15mg tablet so that he gets half in the morning and half at night, so I think it might be a little easier than trying to dissolve the whole tablet and get it down him at once.  I'll try using a little less water the first time so I can add a little more and get the rest off the sides.

    Thanks for your reply!

  • We put 1 ml of water & the solutab in a tiny dish, then sucked it up in a medicine dropper.  We never had a problem.  GL

  • just so you know- many docs don't even know this -- solutabs are not meant to be broekn in 1/2. The active meds in the micrograules are not evenly distributed in the tablet- so a 1/2 a tablet does not necessarily = a 1/2 dose. there is no way to know.

so again, if it doesn't seem to be working well- this could be why... and you might try doing the full 15mg tablet at one time - whic should work just fine - since the drug shuts down the pumps for 24 hours in most people... so there is usually no need to dose twice a day in the average person.

good luck- hope it works for you!  I started it on Friday for Grayson and yesterday it really started to kick in and offer him relief. Before that he was screaming like a wild man during bottles and hardly eating. now he's back to normal.

This is exactly what we do.  Its not as easy as if it was in a liquid form, but it does get easier the more you do it!

This is pretty much they way I give it to DD but I crush the solutab between two spoons then add a bit of warm water to it using the syringe and stir it up using the tip of the syringe before drawing it up.  GL

Yeah, I was thinking it wasn't meant to be split - there's no mark on the tablet like on most pills you can split, and I had the hardest time trying to split it in half last night!  I'll give it a few days to get into Luke's system and if it doesn't seem to be working, we'll definitely have to try giving him the whole thing at once.  Glad to hear it is working for your Grayson - that sounds like what Luke is doing now, so hopefully relief is in sight!

DO NOT CRUSH!!!  It should say this on the package from the pharmacy... you will render the drug inactive if you crush the microgranules! Total waste of money since your baby will not be getting the full dose- or any active drug if you crush it too much- esp since there is no need to crush it to dissolve... just pop it into the syringe and shake with the water.
