LO sleeping in a swing?

LO has reflux and has to be elevated.  When we use the wedge he kind of rolls down during the night.  So we have started what may be a bad habit of putting him into his swing around 9 pm.  DH stays up with him until about 3 am and then I take over from there, so he sleeps the whole night in his swing (the Little Lamb Swing from Fisher Price).  Is this a bad habit?  He is going 3 hour stretches between feedings and seems happy, I am just not sure if this will create more problems down the road when we try to get him into his crib.

Re: LO sleeping in a swing?

  • My DS has reflux and we started putting him to sleep in the swing.  He was started on meds yesterday, and our plan is to let him sleep in the swing long enough for the meds to seem like they are helping - 2-3 days, according to the pedi.  I don't know if it is going to cause problems with the crib or not, but honestly we're taking it one day at a time right now!

  • My DS had reflux as well and we would let him sleep in his carrier and put that in his crib.  We did that for about a month and it helped him sleep through the night, he transitioned to his crib from there it took about 2 days.  I wouldnt worry too much about it, but we also elevated his whole mattress by putting a folded blanket under it and it helped keep him from sliding too much, good luck

At 3 weeks, I don't see it as a problem.  I think you should do whatever you need to do right now.

  • I asked my nurse the same thing and she said to do whatever it takes right now, but at 12 weeks to start crackin down.

  • At that age I'd say it's okay.  At our 2 month visit our doctor told us we should start transitioning her from the swing to her crib.  But we never had Reflux issues to deal with.  But at this a month I'd say it's okay to have them sleep that way.

  • Nope, do whatever you have to do to get him to sleep.  We had DS sleep there at night for the first month or so.  We have the same swing and DS slept there for all his naps until just recently.  It took a few days to break the habit of napping in the swing, but it was well worth it in the end.

  • DS slept in his swing until 5 weeks because he wouldn't sleep anywhere else.  Do what you have to do!

  • We have the same swing *AND* DH and I used to do the same thing.  At 1 month we decided no more all night swing...so we started by putting her down at 9 in the swing.  DH stay up until about 11:30-12.  (He feeds and changes her at 11...usually she is very sleepy and barely notices she's being changed or fed).  He puts her in the crib and she'll sleep there until anywhere between 3:00-5:00.  I get up...change her, feed her and then put her back in the swing until usually 8 or 9 (but I think her sleeping pattern in the morning is about to change so we'll see what happens with that!).  Our next goal is to not put her in the swing at 9...put her right into the crib.  I dunno how that's going to go...we tried it a few times when she just turned 3 months but she didn't like it...maybe when she's 4 months lol/

  • We have the same swing.  We call it the crack swing because DS loves it so much.  DS still takes all of his naps there (he's sleeping in it as I type) For a long time he had his days and nights mixed up and would end up in the swing at somewhere between 3-5.  Now he sleeps very nicely in his co-sleeper at night.
