Sleeping after birth

Obviously, I won't be getting much sleep for a while after he is born, but how long does it usually take until you can sleep they way you did preg-pg?

For example: when is it safe to sleep on your tummy again?  Will you still need a pillow between your knees for a while?

Thanks!

Re: Sleeping after birth

  • Depends if you have a vaginal birth or a c-section, I'd imagine.

I remember being thrilled in the hospital at my ability to sleep on my back again after DS was born.

  • Sleep?? What's that? Stick out tongue

I would kill for the kind of sleep I was getting in third tri (and at the time I thought it was awful).  I can't really sleep on my stomach yet because I'm bfing and it's just not comfortable. When I do get a chance to sleep, I can literally fall asleep within seconds in any position imaginable. I used to be very picky about having to sleep on my stomach. Those days are over.

  • I had a vaginal birth and could sleep on my stomach right away, although sleeping on my back has felt like absolute heaven!  Also, I had to sleep with a pillow between my knees for the last few weeks of pregnancy and I noticed that I no longer needed it, literally, the night after she was born.  For me, sleeping went back to normal right away.  I hope the same goes for you!

  • at 1 week i felt better down there and was able to sleep normally. i go into such a quick deep sleep sometimes its so awesome. I slept so horribly at the end of pg its so nice now...even if it is only in tiny increments.
  • I had a c-section and was able to start sleeping on my stomach in the last few nights.  But sleeping on my back right after birth was like heaven!  I still use a pillow between my legs, but only because I got so used to it when I was pregnant that it still feels weird not to have it there!
  • The first few days will be rough to even roll even a few inches if you have a bad tear (I felt like my butt was cemented to the bed).  However, after getting up and moving around, and once I was home and got in my own bed, I felt a lot better.  I was sleeping on my stomach about 5 days PP. :)

ETA:  My milk never came in, so my boobs never hurt.

  • I slept on my stomach our first night home (DD was 2 days old). It felt gooood. When my milk came in (around day 3) I hugged a pillow and it helped with the pain because I had to lay on my stomach because I missed it so much :-)
