Mixed Feelings

Now that I wrote an update to my growth spurt post, DH tried to give DS the bottle again and he took it.

I'm sitting here like an ass crying. I want him to be able to take bottles from DH, plus it would help me while he wants to nurse 24/7. However, I didn't expect to feel so sad about it. There he is sucking away making his sweet little cooing sounds he makes when he breastfeeds and it's killing me.

Now DH is crying because I am. We are a mess.

Re: Mixed Feelings

  • I feel your frustration.  I was the same way, kinda.  My LO is a very eager eater.  My nipples were literally going to fall off (well it felt like that anyways)  Everyone was telling me to pump and let my nipple heal, but I felt like a failure if I did that.

After suffering for over 6 weeks I pumped for a day and gave LO bottles all day. It really was hard for me to do, but I found something wonderful out of it.  I got bottles that LO had to work for the milk with, so it kept him on the nipple longer, which in turn helped us when he did BF, he wasn't pulling off and relatching all the time.  Plus it gave my nips some healing time.  Now we do about one bottle a day, which gives me a break.  I am finally feeling good about my choice to do this.  It helped us all out in the long run, and I got over my feelings of sadness and failure, and really enjoy the time we do BF now that I am not in pain.

Sorry you are having a rough time.  I hope it gets better for you soon.

  • Im sorry that it is hard for you...Hugs... But give it a few days and you will enjoy the fact that someone else can feed DS and you can take a little break. I love every minute that I have with DS nursing him, but I also know that DH enjoys giving him BM from a bottle every once and awhile too. Plus DS gets bottled BM when I am at work.
  • DD completely refused to nurse today.  She would take BM in a bottle, but threw an absolute fit when I tried to get her to nurse.  Yesterday she nursed with no problem.  NO IDEA what is going on.  :-(

  • DD refuses to nurse most of the time now because we had to supplement because of serious weight loss issues. I basically ep now.
  • Oh that's great ladies, a woman posts about being worried about giving her son his first bottle and you all post with horror stories. Way to freak someone out.

To the OP: I felt the exact same way when DH gave Lily her first bottle. And her second and her third. He loves to feed her and I feel so guilty about feeling sad because I know that he just wants to help and wants to feel connected to her as well.  The good news - she's still nursing like a champ and go straight from bottle to boob with no issues. Just try to think of it as sharing those wonderful sweet coos with your husband. It's hard but it's worth it.

  • Annabelle totally refuses the bottle, no matter what is in it. I guess it's a good thing my douchebag boss decided to fire me because there's no way I would have gone back to work if she didn't take a bottle. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, Gretchen. Luckily he ate just fine from me during the niight.

I felt so stupid crying but luckily DH undersood why I was feeling that way.  I didn't expect I'd feel that way, myself.
