Babies: 0 - 3 Months

premie moms

Does your baby hit regular milestones?  According to what I've read, he's supposed to be smiling at 5 weeks, but he's not.  Will he hit his milestones according to his EDD?

Re: premie moms

  • Each baby is different. It also depends on how premature they are. I always keep my DS's adjusted age in mind when it comes to developmental milestones. So far he has been hitting things early or on time, but that can always change.

  • It can go either way. We were told when she was born that she would always be about a month behind on things- but she isn't, and in fact, sometimes she's a bit ahead. This surprises us as much as the pedi and just means that her brain was ready for "outside" development. Different parts of the brain develop at different rates, and I wouldn't worry at all about no smiling at 5 weeks....I think the general consensus is around 6-8 weeks for a social smile milestone (some obviously hit this much earlier and some later!).?
  • Sam was 5 weeks early and did not smile in response to our smile until almost 4 months. Now he's a smiling, giggling fool. Try not to stress about the milestones. I know it's hard.?

My LO was not a preemie and didn't really smile with any frequency until almost eight weeks (we caught what I thought were social smiles before then, but they were few and far between).  Now he smiles a lot more and has even started giggling, which is SO cute.  I wouldn't worry about it yet.  Everything I read said babies should be smiling by two months, but most start around 4-6 weeks.  With your baby's prematurity, I wouldn't start to worry until 3 or 4 months.  Also keep in mind that not every baby is a super happy baby.  Mine has a more mellow personality, which I suspect may be why it took him awhile to smile more frequently.

  • DD was 6 weeks early and little behind on the smiling but ahead on other things. For instance, she is rolling over already...so it is what it is ..

  • My LO was 5 weeks early...still no smiles...but definitely early with lifting his head and he's actually rolled over too!  My pedi always stresses his adjusted age...which would make him 3 weeks old.  Every baby is different though...dont stress!

  • My DS just starting giving us real smiles over the weekend, especially yesterday. He was 6 weeks early. So I think he was a bit behind on that one. But I agree with PP he seems to be ok in other areas. He loves tummy time and has really great head control recently. Honestly, I hardly check out my books anymore. I figure he'll do things when he is ready and I just keep trying to do all that I can to encourage him.
