One more question.....SAHMs

Are you still able to save some for retirement?  I know it's important to have a good retirement savings....so I wonder if I can make it work with one paycheck, plus save?  Have any of you put that on hold for a while?

  • My DH contributes a fair amount to his 401K...I rolled over my 401K from my old job into an IRA. We're not contributing anything at this moment, but I hope to be able to start up contributions when our car is paid off in October. Retirement savings is a priority to us - you can't finance your retirement, and we don't want to be working when we're 70!

  • I stopped contributing when DH got laid off.  At this point, I want my money more liquid because it is uncertain as to when he'll go back.  Once he goes back to work, I will contribute to my IRA (former 401K) and some other investments that I had prior to marriage.

  • DH contributes but not as much as he used to.  I don't since I don't make any money right now.
  • Mike contributes to his 403b. I need to move my 403b into an IRA and start saving again. (I work PT)

  • Right now we just put extra money into 401K and savings. Some month it is more than others.

  • No, we haven't put that on hold.  I myself do not save since I don't earn an income, but we are saving and investing in our future.  We are actually working towards early retirement.  That is a big priority for us.  It takes some sacrifice right now, but our needs are met, we're comfortable and we just make it work because we know what our goals are.
