Pregnant after a Loss

The Doctors Show

On The Doctors Show yesterday, they did a segment on SIDS-causes and ways to prevent.  Surprisingly, one of the suggestions was to not have the border around the crib (I knew you couldn't have blankets, pillows and such in the crib with the baby, but you see so many people with the border around the crib, I didn't realize you weren't supposed to do this).

Do you plan to have your crib with absolutely nothing? or do you plan to have the border, etc....?

Also, another suggestion was to have your infant sleep in your room for at least the first 6 months, which studies have shown to reduce the probability of SIDS.

Do you plan on having the baby sleep in the crib, or having him/her in your room with you at night???

Just food for thought :)

  • I have seen and read about not having a bumper in the crib.  I guess it makes sense it just seems odd since people used them for sooo many years.  But to be safe I will probably skip that and the conforter in the crib.

And as far as sleeping in your room... they mean in a bassinet or pnp right?  Not actually in YOUR bed, I thought that was the biggest no-no when it came to SIDS...

  • they have breathable bumpers. My friend used it.

I love that show. so many helpful hints.

I found out on there to use dryer sheet for moqitoes and bugs. It works great!

  • We had a bumper and I don't have a problem with it.  Seems like SIDS = suffocation, so if the baby sleep with his or her face in the bumper, that is a suffocation risk... I would say a bumper is fine at least until the baby can roll, because before then, it doesn't really matter what is in the crib because the baby can't get to it.

We removed our bumper around 6 months because she kept standing on it.

They also make breathable bumpers that are supposed to be safer.

  • Kate will be in our room for the first couple months in her bassinet and once we are comfortable with putting her in her room she'll sleep in her crib. we do have bumpers in there but she will be on her slanted sleep positioner so she cant go near the bumpers. SIDS is a huge fear of mine.....but im not worried about the bumpers. She will be bundled in swaddlers rather than blankets so nothing can get near her face... ::sigh:: so many things to worry about...

  • I love that show too! Except too many commercials of course...anyways...baby will most likely sleep in the PNP w/ us in our room for the first couple months. I think the bummer on the crib is fine untill he starts rolling and can get out of the sleep positioner, then I'll take it off. I thought I heard somewhere once they are big enough to crawl, etc. you can put it back on again and it helps from getting there feet/hands stuck between the crib bars...not positive though...
  • I agree w/ pp's that say to look for breathable bumpers or remove them when baby is rolling over.

Since I've had 3 children already... I can answer the sleep question with different answers. lol.  The first 2 of our baby's did the same thing... They HATED the bassinet in our room, so they ended up in their cribs early.  Not b/c I wanted them to, but b/c they really slept better there. I would wake up and check on them to see if their chest was rising an lowering often! lol. The third baby was my best sleeper.  She would sleep anywhere, so b/c I thought she would be our last baby... we had her sleep in the pnp in our room for longer than the others.  She preferred it unlike them.

We used bumper with DD and she is fine. She also slept in a sleep positioner for a long time, so there was no risk of her rolling into it...and we used sleep sacks....no blankets. This baby will also have a bumper and we plan on using the sleep positioner again. I tihnk it's whatever you feel most comfortable doing. We will keep him in a portable crib/bassinet next to our bed for the first 6 weeks, then he will move to his crib.
  • We have a bed in both of our rooms so DH and I will be the ones moving around lol. I want the baby to sleep with us for awhile in the beginning and I dont think we will be using the bumper at all. Why risk it if you dont need to right? Plus in our big bedroom is a ceiling fan and they also say that cuts down on the risks of SIDS so that will be the baby's room. I dont know if they said that on the Doctors but justthought I would share. I thionk they even mention that in Baby baragins.
