dehydrated after sleeping?

Every night I wake up about every 2 hours to pee and I'm so thirsty so I wind up taking a few big sips of water. Well, when I wake up for good in the morning I feel totally dehydrated. Sometimes I even feel swollen when I wake up. Anyone find a way around this? It's the only time I feel dehydrated and it's really tough!

Re: dehydrated after sleeping?

  • I don't have any advice...but I've been the same way almost since the beginning of my pregnancy. It sucks.

  • I'm right there with you so hopefully someone has some advice.  I never used to drink water during the night pre-pregnancy.

  • I drink water each time I get up to pee and I'm still a little dehydrated in the morning. Just drink a lot of water when you wake up and throughout the day.
  • Don't know if you leave your water bottle next to the bed or at a place where you have to get it while walking to or from the bathroom...  I suggest the latter, that way you're up, you're moving and blood flow is in the legs/feet again.  Also, if you can stand it, elevate your feet at a level higher than your heart (I use a couple of folded up blankets - they stay in place better than pillows).

Another suggestion is: try to sleep more on your left side than your right side.  The main vein for bloof flow to legs/feet gets blocked more when you're on your right side.  Of course, I can't stay on one side all night, and it's really up to LO which one she lets me sleep on sometimes, but I try to keep it to the left if I can.  :-)

Hope any of this helps!  G/L!

  • You're not alone... though I feel dehydrated during the day, too. But when I wake up, my fingers are swollen and my tongue feels like sandpaper.

My main suggestion is to drink MORE water during the day to keep yourself hydrated?and not increase the peeing during the night.

Another suggestion, if your bedroom is dry, is to get a humidifier.

  • Oh and chug that H20 during the day too... that is good advice!
  • Drink a ton of water during the day and leading up to bed time.

  • I don't have any advice for you but definitely know what you're going through.  I can't drink in the middle of the night tho, as it offsets the m/s and that's worse for me than just feeling dehydrated. I can barely move my hands in the middle of the night for the swelling. I just do what I can during the day and try to ignore the awful nights... knowing they will be over soon! :)

  • I'm the same way!  when I wake up the bottom of my feet are always a tiny bot swollen.  It's very odd.
  • I have the same exact problem!  I am up ALL night in the bathroom and I try to drink tons of water during the day.  I drink at least 8 oz during the night and I still wake up totally dehydrated.  I have no advice other than try to drink as much as  you can when you wake up in the middle of the night and then try to drink right when you wake up in the morning.    I might try to get a humidifier today like someone posted.
  • I've found that even small amounts of salt in my dinner can have a dramatic impact on my fluid when I wake up. Make sure you keep an eye on salt intake, especially what is hidden in processed or restaurant food.

    This for me.

I drink anywhere from 96 - 120+ oz of water a day anyway. But I hate getting up so many times to pee at night, so I try to taper it off come the evening. I'm so exhausted from getting up to pee six times.  I keep water by my bedside and drink a few sips if I'm thirsty when I wake up, but I usually just fall back to sleep (and pray I don't have to get up to pee again!!).

  • I down a HUGE glass of water right before I go to bed, and keep a full glass by my bed because I wake up thirst. In the morning my pee is very yellow (tmi sorry) and I feel thirsty, even though I drank at night, so I down more water first thing.  I feel re-hydrated by 10am or so.

Try taking extra vitamin C : it helps clean out your blood and makes things easier on your kidneys.  You can even take it with some calcium before bed which should help your quality of sleep a bit, and make sure baby's getting enough as well.  Vit C and calcium help each other absorb too.

  • Same... I constantly want to chug cold water!  And then I have to keep getting up to pee but I'm sooo thirsty!
