Grinding her teeth already - worry?

Ava is grinding her teeth already - anyone ask their ped/dentist about this?

Her dad does this, and wears a mouth guard at night. I know there's not much to do about it at this age (16 months) and I am not so much worried about her 10 teeth as I am about jaw issues and bad habits.

It appears to be random, and not stress. What stress? She's one. lol.

Any thoughts? thanks.

  • she might just like the sound. DD did it for about a week and hasn't since. She might just be experimenting with those new teefers.

  • DS went through a grinding phase. I asked his dentist about it and she said it is perfectly normal. They are just experimenting with the feel and sound of teeth in their mouth. She said it is only a problem if you notice them clenching and grinding all the time or if you notice any wearing or damage to the teeth. Also, some do it while new teeth are coming in. DS did it for about a month and then stopped.

  • I've noticed DS doing this from time to time and I freak out because I have grinding/clenching issues and have to wear a mouth guard. I really don't want him to suffer through the pain that I've gone through because of it.

I hope it is just a phase and not a genetic thing. Do you hear your DD doing it at night? I've never heard DS thru the monitor while he's sleeping. Maybe it is just something they do for the sound or feeling while they're teething.

  • DD does it occasionally, I think when her teeth are hurting, and the dentist said there's not much they can do for grinding right now anyway. DS on the other hand, has a habitual grinding habit. I can't really pinpoint when he does it, I think at night, but his front teeth are bad!!! I think it started as a chipped tooth and then he has ground his front two teeth basically to the nerve. When he was at the dentist yesterday, they told me those teeth don't really fall out till 7-8 years old.......they need to fall out already........and once his adult teeth come in, we'll definitely need to do something for him so it doesn't happen again. I hate teeth grinding!
  • DD does it a lot when her teeth hurt.  There is an article about it in Parents Magazine (July '09).  They said it is as normal as thumb sucking. HTH
