1st Trimester

Pedicures?

So, my mom is in town visiting, and we have appts to get pedicures tomorrow.  The problem is, I work in the spa that we're going to, and I haven't told anyone the news yet (nor do I want to).  I've heard that there are certain pressure points in the ankles that can trigger labor, but I just thought was an old wives tale.  I googled it today, and found lots of conflicting info.   What are your opinions?

  • had a pedi today.  feel fab.  if you are worried ask them to leave out the massaging of your footsies.  tell them your foot is sore from a sprain or something....

    Same here.

my MW complimented me on them every appt.

  • OH, and my doctor said it was fine and actually suggested it for me....

  • Go for it!  It's wonderful!!

I've been getting pedi's since first tri.  The smells of the different lotions and things might bother you a little bit in first tri, but I've had plenty of rubbing and massaging done without any extra cramping or BH.

  • I think the fear of starting labor is only for late 3rd tri.  Besides that, it's just caution about infection (nail file, cuticle clipper, etc).  And fumes from polish and remover.

  • i get a mani pedi every two weeks at least....
  • as per pp, it could only trigger labor late in your pregnancy!  Enjoy!
  • I have had one and I am getting another one on Saturday. However, they said I couldn't get a massage until I was passed my 1st tri. which is what I really wanted, so I am getting a pedi. instead, dh's treat;)
  • You can get a pedi but you cannot have your ankles massaged. My friend is a massage therapist & I go to another massage therapist all the time & they both said its bad. HOWEVER when you're like 40 weeks pregnant...you'll want those ankles rubbed, both believe it helps induce labor. I'm not a firm believer though, I had mine massaged & went to 41w5d w/ dd

  • The accupressure points in the ankles are generally only stimulated by prolonged (10-15 seconds) pressure, so the massage during your pedicure should be fine.  Think about it- you probably rub your ankles when putting on lotion with no harm done.  (I'm certified in reflexology, if that helps my credibility at all!)
  • i am a cosmo and i was taught that the pressure points are on the bottom of your feet...... i was never taught what tri to not do it?

maybe just ask for a really light massage...... that usually wouldnt hit anything bad.
