Pregnant after a Loss

Mexico - would you go?

First, I apologize to anyone who lives in/is from Mexico and finds this post annoying or offensive.  That's truly not my intent.  I'm just a nervous nelly when it comes to this pregnancy.

So, a friend is getting married in Mexico in a few months and I'm not sure if I should go.  I'm nervous enough about flying while pregnant because of a blood clotting issue.  Add to that the whole swine flu thing and I'm even more nervous.  I talked to my dr this morning and her advice was to wait a month so we can see what the status of swine flu is at that time (she's not concerned about flying and blood clots).  I know I'm probably overreacting, but given my history of losses I would hate to do anything that puts this baby at a greater risk.

Thoughts?

Re: Mexico - would you go?

  • I don't see any problem with it.  I will be in Mexico next month as I plan to go on a cruise - of couse will only be there for part of 1 day, but still in Mexico...

  • I also don't see a problem with it. Swine flu is now worldwide, mexico is just the place it started.

I didn't go anywhere, and still ended up with swine flu, for example.

I say go and make it into a babymoon!!!!?

  • What part of Mexico? DH and I went to Cabo the first week of June when I was 21 weeks and it was absolutely amazing. Everyone was telling us to stay home due to the swine flu but we thought it was a joke. My doc approved me going so we went...so glad we did. Mexico is wonderful!

  • I'm in a very similar situation- next month we have a trip planned to go to Argentina (where swine flu is really on the rampage right now as its their winter). I also have a blood clotting disorder. So I was worried about both. My doctor gave me the ok to go. She said the swine flu is everywhere and that you can't live in a bubble your whole pregnancy. We're still going to go- although my fears aren't completely gone. Just wanted to let you know others are in a similar situation. I'd say go and enjoy your trip! Doctor did advise using good hand-washing and avoiding sick people/crowds.
  • I would totally go. Swine flu is everywhere now so going to Mexico isn't going to up your risk. The only thing you have to worry about while flying is sitting for long periods just make sure you get up and walk around the cabin some and stay hydrated. I just drove about 9 hours from home and had to stop every couple of hours to get up and walk around--same deal! Go and have fun!!

  • You are at risk for swine flu anywhere you go (here in the U.S. or in Mexico, or anywhere else really), and in the fall, pregnant women are at the top of the list for getting the H1N1 flu shot. As far as the clotting issue, it's not too long of a flight to Mexico, you can wear support hose and take walks around the plane. (My friend flew to Florida at 32 weeks, and she was fine). It's normal to feel like you have to protect your baby, but just know that going to Mexico is OK, especially if you are going to a nice resort or tourist spot. (Of course, make sure you are drinking bottled or cooler water, try not to drink or eat anything from street vendors or markets, and keep a list of English speaking OB's in the area if possible). Have fun!
