Formula help :(

Looks like I might be headed that route :( Right now my LO eats 6oz every 4ish hours.  I'm just barely pumping enough for when he's with mom during the day and I don't think he gets enough from me at night.  I've been sick with a stuffy nose for 3 days now so I called his pediatrician to see what I can take and she said I could take benadryl, but to drink lots of liquids cause it'll decrease my milk.  So, my question is... what type of formula do you recommend if I have to supplement? My pediatrician told me 3 different kinds, I just wanted to know what you guys' thoughts were.  I'm planning on only giving him formula at night.  I hope he doesnt take to that and not want my milk anymore :(

Re: Formula help :(

  • Best advice, never never give a bottle when you are with LO at night. That will KILL your supply. No matter how much they want to eat, give it. Try bedsharing, you get sleep and baby gets food as much as they want.

  • How will pumping at night while  giving a bottle diminish supply? My LO gets 4 oz of formula at 7 because he was cluster feeding and I couldn't keep up with his demand. Then he gets 5 oz of breastmilk at midnight from the bottle. So...please explain how my supply will diminish?

He's likely cluster feeding b/c that's what babies do to increase your supply.  Also, evening is a popular time of day for babies to cluster feed.  Since your baby takes those 4 oz of formula and it's not your body providing it, your body learns not to make that amt of milk.

To the OP:  I have insufficient glandular tissue and must supplement with formula.  I use Parent's Choice b/c it's cheap and regulated the same as the brand name stuff is.  All 3 of my kids have thrived on generic formula.  If you try it and after a few days it doesn't agree with your LO's tummy, you can try a different brand.  Good luck!
