I would love anyone's thoughts on this. I've called the pedi and they think it's no big deal but I hate that DS is so uncomfortable! About a week ago, DS stopped pooping. He used to go 2-4 times a day. After a few days, pedi said to give him Karo, I did, he pooped, then nothing.
Two days later, I used the thermom trick, he pooped, then nothing.
My diet hasn't changed at all. I don't use formula. Pedi says DS is not constipated since his stool is not hard, but it's definitely not like it normally is. And while he normally passes gas some, now it's a lot, it stinks to high heaven and it often hurts him. The pedi thinks all of this is fine and that DS can just take Karo every day to poop. I'm kinda uncomfortable with that b/c I don't understand why the kid stopped pooping all of a sudden and I'd rather he not take Karo every day.
If anybody has any ideas or advice on this, please share. TIA!
Re: Help..DS has stinky gas and no BM
He went 3 days with no BM before I gave Karo b/c he was so uncomfortable. Then 2 more days before I did thermometer trick b/c he was still really uncomfortable. The pedi said it's normal to go w/o BMs but is it normal that they're so uncomfortable?
I read somewhere (sorry, I don't remember where) that at about 12 weeks, bm changes-prior to that point, it had colostrum in it, which is a natural laxative. After that point, no colostrum in the bm, which means that your LO has to learn to go by themselves. And it's a tricky process...(also read this somewhere else) you need to tighten your stomach muscles and relax your anus. Very tricky for someone to learn how to do. And they do most of their pooping on their backs-which, if you think about...not the easiest position to poop in.
My ds went from pooping daily at his two month appointment to pooping between every 2-7 days when I took him in for his four month. My doc was fine with that. now, I think ds would be a little happier if he pooped more often, b/c there's always a bit of crabbiness right before he goes. They say that as long as the poop is not hard, then they're not constipated and don't need any help to make them go.
As for the stinky gas....I don't know! Maybe b/c the poop is in there longer? Ds sometimes has really stinky gas, and I can't pin it down to anything I've eaten.
At our two month appointment, our pediatrician said not to be surprised if the frequency of BMs decreased, even to one every few days. She said that if he was still passing gas there was nothing to worry about because that meant the path was still open. The AAP's Caring for Your Baby and Young Child Birth to Age 5 says that "between two and three months, the frequency of stools in both breastfed and bottle-fed babies may decrease dramatically; some breastfed babies have only one bowel movement every three or four days, and a few perfectly healthy breastfed infants have just one a week." It goes on to say that "as long as your baby is eating well, gaining weight, and his stools are not too hard or dry, there's no reason to be alarmed by this drop in frequency."
I'd call your doctor again and ask how many days between BMs is too many -- when you should start trying tricks like the thermometer and when you should just wait it out.
