Humidifier needed in the south?

We live in New Orleans and DH and I are going back and forth on getting a humidifier for the nursery.  Typically it's pretty humid here year round, but I keep reading that regardless of that, you should have a humidifier.  DH disagrees and says the baby will be fine without it - if we need it later when LO is sick, we can get it then.

Any thoughts?  What are you other southern parents doing?

Re: Humidifier needed in the south?

  • My parents had a humidifier for us as kids(from NC). My brother had chronic bronchitis as a baby, and it really helped. Maybe you can get the cool mist humidifier b/c it is so hot where you live (I am assuming its hot in the winter as well). If your child has a cold or any respiratory problems, it makes a huge difference!

  • I live on the west coast of FL. I'd say, at least in the times I've been to NO, that it's even more humid in NO than here.  The only times I've ever used a humidifier with my kids was when they were sick with croup.  Our house even has a central dehumidifier and I've still never felt the need.
  • We're in Atlanta and using a cool mist humidifier for DS as we speak. We got both a humidifer and vaporizer when he was born.
  • We're skipping the humidifier.  It seems like even on really cold days here it's not super dry.

  • I only got one for DD during the winter because the heater on in the house would dry us all out, I figured it was taking a toll on her too.

We got the penguin one from Target <3 so cute!

  • I'm in the Dallas area and I do have a humidifier for my kids (ages 2 1/2 and 4 1/2).  Colds and allergies occur all the time and we constantly have the humidifier on, especially in the Winter.  I've learned that their little stuffy noses get worse when they don't have the humidifier on because it starts to dry up and doesn't easily come out when suctioned/nose blown.  Also something that really helps is a saline nose spray.  Can you tell I deal with this a lot?  When my 2 1/2 was a baby he had RSV, bronchitis and other breathing conditions along with colds out the wazoo.  (We actually own our own nebulizer too.)

  • I got one and used it a bunch because DD was sick for 6 months straight it seemed to help at first, but then I discovered it had mold growing in it and stopped using it. Double edge sword. After a while I got to wondering if it made her WORSE as once I stopped using it she wasn't as bad, ugh. Hard to say. sense then I would only buy another one if my pedi reccomended it and I would get one that would have a filter or something and an easy way to clean it in the dishwasher so it wouldn't mold.
  • Hi fellow louisianaian. W/ my ds we got one when he was a few moths old. His Pedi. said it would be a good idea. Do you run your heater anytime during the winter? I found that he and I would both dry out in december/ janurary.

You can wait and see before buying, but they aren't very expensive if you want to just go ahead and get one.

  • I live in Atlanta, but, we run either the AC or heat throughout the year, so our house is very dry, despite the humidity outdoors. We definitely use a humidifier, esp. in the winter.
