sore nipples

I know that this is a necessary evil when it come to BF.  It really only hurts when he first latches on and as he keeps eating it doesnt hurt.  However they are so sore that I dread when feeding time comes along.  I have the lanisoh(sp) cream and that is not helping anymore, any tricks or anything I can get that could help me out?  Thank you in advance, we are very new at this.

Re: sore nipples

  • Time.  That's all that seemed to help since DS's latch was good and I was using the lanolin cream.  I've heard about some cooling pads that some women use, but I read about those after my nipples started feeling better.  Letting them "breathe" also helped, so I made sure not to wear tight bras.

Thanks for this. I am having a similar issues, my nipples are very sore & my breasts are as well. I hope to get the cooling pads once DS is discharged from the NICU.

  • I had this problem when we first started too.  I had to prepare myself mentally each time I put her on the one side because the first few seconds hurt so bad.

Try to let your nips get as much air as possible, this really helped me.  I just went braless alot of the time.  Lansinoh cream also helped.  I think I was in pain for about two or three weeks before it got better.  Just hang in there, it will get better!!

  • Yeah, I don't remember exactly when it went away, but I know by 6 weeks I had no pain at all.  It was a gradual lessening of pain.  Of course this month was my 2nd pp AF and ouchie, it was newborn nips all over again, not fair!
  • The comfort gel pads helped the most for me with sore nipples.  The initial latch soreness went away for me at about 6 weeks.

  • Hang in there. As a BF newbie myself, it DOES get better.  The gel cooling pads are awesome.  I also froze some wet washclothes and put them on for a bit after a feeding. It was great relief if you have any other soreness.

Right now, my left nipple doesn't even hurt during latch, but my right one gives me the "toe curling" pain for a few moments until he's good and sucking.  Hang in there.

  • I'm not sure if this helps but I take Motrin in the evenings. For some reason, my nipples are more sore in the evening and the Motrin seems to help. I also have a bra that's cotton that is very soft on my nipples.
