Pregnant after a Loss

Ectopic pregnancy?

I'm asking this question for my best friend. She just found out on Sunday that she is excepting baby #1. A few years ago, she had an ectopic pregnancy. Her and her husband have been TTC for a few months and she wants to be excited, but is so nervous. She went today for bloodwork and will do a follow on Thursday and a u/s next Thrusday. The nurse said that because she has a ectopic in the past her chances are higher, is that true?

Any advice is welcome.

Re: Ectopic pregnancy?

  • I was told my chance was higher of another e/p but I also had a great shot at a healthy pregnancy. Alot of it depends on if there was an underlying problem that caused the ectopic ie: Endometriosis, clogged tube etc...I waited only 2 cycles, and it looked on my u/s that I even O'd on the same side as my ectopic. I will say a prayer for a healthy pregnancy for your friend, so far mine has been great!!

Yes her chances are higher if they didn't remove the tube that was affected. Normally they will do an early scan to make sure things are in the right place. I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Oh, and I wanted to add. I had an early u/s at 6 weeks to make sure my LO was in the right spot this time around.

  • It is statistically true, but the u/s should be reassuring to her.

I was told that my chances of another ectopic (mine was cervical, rather than tubal) were no higher than normal, because a cervical ectopic is so ridiculously rare and they don't really know what causes them (and the few studies they've done indicate no real increased risk, or only a small risk).

  • I was also told that chances were higher but like the pp said it depends on the cause of the first one.  With me, they never did figure it out what caused it.  She should just insist (if they aren't doing so already) that the doctor do multiple blood tests and an early ultrasound to verify the location of the baby.  I also had an u/s early at 5.5 weeks to verify.  It's very possible to have a healthy pregnancy after an e/p!  Good luck to her!
